Large Leak but lowest AHI?

Post by Mikesus » Mon Feb 28, 2005 5:51 am

Last evening was the lowest AHI I have recorded, 1.9!! But, had a LOT of large leaks. (no they did not happen at 3am, and had nothing to do with bathroom runs )

Weird thing is that my pressure stayed round 12 - 13, rather than 14 - 15... Should I try to tighten the mask?

(Previous attempts to tighten have resulted in higher ahi, aerophagia from pressure being so high... I am tempted to leave it alone as long as the wife isn't complaining about the mask farting...)

Nah, don't tighten it. Stop by Home Depot and buy a tube of silicon calking and just apply a thin bead of it all around the mask.

Or is that how you lay tile?

Liam, who would make a crude joke about "laying tile", but can't think of one.

Laying tile would prolly not involve begging... Hmmm...

Anyway, the caulking idea is not bad... Could just use the plastic bag round my head to seal everything too, more cost effective methinks...

Aerophagia

Post by -SWS » Mon Feb 28, 2005 7:41 am

Mike, re: aerophagia. I've read of some patients who seem to experience CPAP-induced aerophagia worse if they sleep with their chin tucked forward (toward their chest). Sleeping with a pillow or rolled towel arranged so the head tilts straight up or slightly back actually seems to help these patients. That is essentially the same head/chin orientation that is used to free the airway prior to administering mouth-to-mouth resucitation. That kind of implies that a straight and unimpeded airway path is necessary for at least some CPAP patients to avoid aerophagia. Wouldn't be surprised if that kind of sleeping arrangement didn't lower AHI a bit in some patients and even keep pressure requirements down.
