SinuCleanse and nasal congestion help

Post by bookwrm63 » Sun Jan 07, 2007 9:00 pm

Hi all. Due to a cold and nasal congestion, I went out and bought the SinuCleanse system with neti pot. After I tried it I felt great and very clear for about 1 hour. The congestion started creeping back in. For those of you who use this system, is there a different trick or is it something that you need to do many times before the congestion clears and STAYS clear? I also bought Afrin spray with extra moisturizer but I know I can only use that for about 3 nights to avoid rebound affect. Any other thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I do also use now the Ayr saline gel at night.
Thanks.

I have used the neti pot for some time myself and find that it helps. It doesn't have any lasting effect, all it does is wash out the nose, it doesn't slow down the production of mucous.

It is good for allergy sufferers as it washes allergens out of the nose.

If you use a product that is hypertonic it may have a drying effect. Hypertonic solutions have more salt in them and this creates a drying effect.

I have been sinus flushing for a couple of years now.(I make my own solution and use a blue sqeeze bulb, but its the same thing)
I started as a total sinus flush wimp. I couldn't even stand the thought of a sinus SPRAY when I started.

I am guessing that most people have to work up to a DEEP flush, and how well you flush out should get better with time.
Make sure you really drain out well. HANG your head down and maybe even rock a bit side to side, then swoop up.
(yoga positions "downward dog" combined with "Greeting the sun" work for me and stretch my knees and hamstrings while I am at it.)

I flush twice a day.
I JUST had a the worst cold I have had since starting to flush a couple years ago. For a couple of days I didn't seem to be making much headway. But after a week I am still getting impressive "results" from each flushing but I feel clear and feel good in between. My non-flushing wife has had the same cold for about a month now and even a round of anti-biotics has not cleared her up or stopped her cough. My cough lasted a couple days.

Sooooo, the morale of the story is to keep it up. See a doc if necessary. But the flush really seems to make it difficult for the cold to get and to MAINTAIN its grip. But in a really bad case you may still have a few bad DAYS. See the doc if it goes on too long for you might have a deep sinus infection if it hangs on.

Thank you both for your replies. I did use the Afrin spray last night and took 2 Benydryl tablets and I was clear for over 15 hours. I will flush out sinuses again tonight and just keep it up. I feel I followed the instructions well (it is a weird process..lol) but was just hoping the result lasted longer. I will continue with it in hopes it will help in the long run. Thanks again!

do it each night before bed, after about a week your congestion should lessen if there are no anatomic defects. If you don't have major allergies after than only a few times per week does the job.

I use the ear aspirator and can squirt the solution up deeper without leaning the head back so far. I also put a pinch of baking soda in the solution which really breaks up any dried or thick mucosa.
