Pillow for side sleepers

Post by JeffH » Thu Jan 04, 2007 4:52 pm

This morning when I was trying to get to sleep (after a long night of not getting to sleep) I reached over and stole my girl friends new pillow. (Don't worry, she had already gotten out of bed) I didn't realize it, but it's a pillow built for side sleepers. Man it was comfortable. Thought I'd pass it along.

I picked up some shapable pillows from Target and I'm enjoying those immensely.

The picture doesn't show the pillow by itself. Does the 2" edge go all around the pillow? Is the edge higher or lower than the center of the pillow? Is it firm or soft?

Years ago, I bought a very soft, solid foam pillow and took a serated knife and hollowed it out (not completely). It makes a wonderful neck support pillow - but it's getting sooooooooo old. I would love to replace it, but I can't find a very soft pillow (with neck support) anywhere.

The 2" baffle goes all the way around it. They have soft and medium firmness pillows.

We bought a couple too, but they were too high for us.

Jeff, can you give me the part number of the "soft" one? I can't find soft vs firm anywhere.

(I hate it when I feel stupid). ....

Sorry Linda. Looks like I lied to you. I was thinking of another pillow I was looking at that they had...not this one. Looks like it comes in one firmness only. Not you mistake, it was mine.

I've bought from them before and they are good at taking returns if you don't like it.

Sorry,

JeffH

Mirage Activa Mask - works well with any pillow

Post by Fredman » Thu Jan 04, 2007 8:54 pm

I have tried a couple of masks, but was encouraged by my local Respiratory Therapist to try the Mirage Activa mask.

The mask is designed to not be tightend down on your face, but lightly strapped. Believe it or not, when the machine starts it basically creates a vaccum and the mask sucks down gently on to your face. The mask almost has a billows affect and will flex against the pillow when you lay on your side.

I rarely have a problem with air leakage when sleeping on my side.

Linda-

Are you looking for something that has a higher edge for neck support? I think from looking at the pillow & description- and from buying way too many pillows thinking they would help my sleep problems over the years - it might not be what you think it is. I think the 'baffle' is a side piece of fabric sewn between the top & bottom of the pillow all the way around so it is a little thicker on the outer edge then a regular pillow, but its not any thicker at the edge then anywhere else. Here are some better pictures from Bed Bath & Beyond of gusseted pillows:

I know what the search for the perfect pillow is like and didn't want you to end ordering something that wasn't what you thought it was. Since you like a soft pillow, what about buying a 1-2" thick memory foam pad and making your own pillow? That way you could have the higher edge, like your other pillow has by laying a donut shaped piece on top of the base piece(s) & you could experiment with the best thickness for you. All you'll need is an electric knife to make cutting the foam easier- one twin size pad should give you lots of material to make several pillows with.

I use the neck pillow by Tempur Pedic and love it. I'm a 100% side sleeper, It's my favorite pillow, even bought their smaller travel pillow that goes with me everywhere.

Happy sleeping,
Sharon

Christine, I think you might be right. It's just strange that it would be called "for side sleepers". ...

I have a couple of those gusseted pillows in my guest bedroom. They are okay, but they are just pillows.

Ya, I'm always in the market for the "bestest" pillow, but I seldom buy any. My old soft pillow just can't be duplicated.

Someday I will probably buy a soft pillow and using some of upholstery thread and needle, take some tucks in the center to make a soft contour pillow. It will probably beat anything I can buy, and alot cheaper.

I got a Pappillow for Christmas and am liking it very much so far. I am having to adjust my arm position a little so that it is not under the part of the pillow that cushions the cheek. The firmness/softness is great for me.

I got this pillow for Christmas and I love it. Works great for side sleeping or back sleeping.
