What to do during power outages
What to do during power outages
Tommorrow night there is a major rain storm and potential of wind gusts to 55-60 mph. Power outages are possible. In addition to apnea, I also have significant anxiety issues. Can someone please assure me that I will likely be ok without my cpap

Find alternate lodging with backup power.
Make reservations.
Sounds like it would be worth the expense.
Otherwise, if you can, get plenty of rest.
Then you can stay up if you need to.

If it's that strong of a storm, you most likely will not be able to sleep anyway. When awake you will have no problem breathing.

Re: What to do during power outages
I'm fortunate in this area. I live in an RV full time (almost 8 years now) and I have a 12V power cord for my CPAP and enough battery capacity to run it for "days" if needed plus an onboard generator to keep the batteries topped off and make my morning coffee.
We had a tornado came through this area a few years back and the entire town had no electrical power for most of the day. As soon as my neighbors saw my lights on they started coming over with empty coffee cups. One even brought their own coffee pot and coffee since they had heard I was running out.
Fortunately no one was hurt and it was an interesting morning for sure.

How long did you go without Cpap before being diagnosed and getting the machine - how many nights/weeks/months/years? And lived to tell about it.
Re: What to do during power outages
I'm in the path of the storm too. My Dream Station won't run without power. However, I was able to get my AEIOmed Everest CPAP (with a battery backup) repaired so I have a spare in case of power outage. It's simply a brick (no stats, no auto adjust), but it's better than nothing.
I an considering ordering the battery backup for the DreamStation.

Re: What to do during power outages
My plan is to use a Goal Zero 400 watt hour machine. Rather than get involved in a long story about inverter AC-DC voltage losses I plan to run my machine on DC. This way I can run the humidifier also. Most manufacuers have a kit for using the machine in a car powered by the cigar lighter. Using the machine in DC removes alot of the losses.

Thanks Julie that was just the reply I was looking for.Julie wrote:How long did you go without Cpap before being diagnosed and getting the machine - how many nights/weeks/months/years? And lived to tell about it.

Get yourself an UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) device. These are normally used for computers, but you can connect anything to it.
There are many types at various price points available. With that your CPAP machine will continue to run even when there is an outage.

Poor answer, to costly for one big enough to be useful..... Jimjipavl wrote: ↑Fri Mar 02, 2018 12:50 pmGet yourself an UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) device. These are normally used for computers, but you can connect anything to it.

I know I repaired computers for years, it would be cheaper and last longer if I just got a CPAP battery but that's a bit too expensive for me.Goofproof wrote:Poor answer, to costly for one big enough to be useful..... Re: What to do during power outages
I have just ordered a Medistrom Pilot 24 battery and a Medistrom car 12 volt charger-DC converter. Hope this works for my Resmed Airsense 10 autoset. Last year, we had a couple of power outages...one lasting 16 plus hours. Will provide a review once it arrives.

Re: What to do during power outages
Well a happy ending my house never lost power due to the storm. Now if I could only fix my leak issue. Thanks for the suggestions, perhaps I should save up to buy a CPAP battery

Re: What to do during power outages
I tried to reply a couple of times but the storm kept wiping me out! Power wasn't too bad, but we lost phone/internet for hours.
Home backup for cpaps is actually quite cheap: a 35 amp-hour AGM scooter battery is only $65 and it could power a cpap for a night with full humidity (depending on a lot of variables), or several nights without. It can be charged with a normal automotive battery charge; I use a BatteryTender that was $45 and came with most of the cables. This is the same type of battery used in mobility scooters and a large version of a UPS battery, so they're safe for indoor use. The only drawback is that they are heavy.
