Short Hose Cover Question

Post by Berks » Tue Feb 20, 2018 10:35 am

Hello! Been using CPAP for just over a month now and I'm continuing to troubleshoot little problems that arise. One of my biggest struggles has been mask-only rainout. I first played around with my climate settings - anything less than "Auto" for humidity leaves me too dried out in my nose. Anything more than 80 degrees in the heated tube irritates me too. So I've been using a barrel cozy from padacheek and that has helped but wasn't enough. Then I added a makeshift short hose cover that I made out of an old fleece sock and it has really helped but the makeshiftness of it is just not cutting it anymore. I have a couple questions before I commit to buying a short hose cover....

1. I have a PR Nuance Pro - Technically these covers below aren't made for that mask but looking at the dimensions I see no reason why I couldn't make it work. Any reason I'm wrong?

OR

2. Of the two above is there a reason I should pick one over the other?

3. I have a 6 foot hose cover that I bought for times I might need to use my SlimLine hose as a backup rather than my ResMed ClimateLine heated hose. Part of me is tempted to use that and pull it up to the tip of my mask hose and have it cover my mask hose, where it connects to the ClimateLine and the portion of the Climate Line the rest of the 6 feet will cover. But I'm not sure if that would actually work OR if it's safe to put a cover on a heated hose.

Any feedback is much appreciated! Thanks!

Either of those would work..1 or 2....I prefer the slightly denser Padacheek over the SnuggleHose based on having both brands in the past.
YMMV as to which you would prefer.

But...there's no reason you can't just do #3 and pull up the 6 ft hose cover you already have and use it.
Having the hose cozy cover part of the heated hose won't hurt a thing. Lots of people use hose cozies on their heated hoses for any number of reasons. It won't get too warm. It just will mean the heater coils won't have to work so hard to keep the hose at whatever temp you have selected.

Thanks Pugsy! I'll try option 3 firs to see if it works and if not I'll get the padacheek cover. I just wasn't sure if it was a safety hazard to put the cover on a heated hose.

What does YMMV mean? I see it a lot here and I haven't been able to figure it out... though I gather it's something like "everyone will have their own preferences, this one's mine, you'll have yours" type of thing. But I haven't been able to figure out the exact acronym.

I have put a Padacheek hose cozy on the heated hose. Only drawback is the weight of the cozy pulling on my already nothing headgear and it can cause the pillows to sort of get pulled out of the nostrils and with my P10 there's nothing to really adjust to offset the weight.

There's always a pro and con to everything and if I really needed or wanted to use the hose cozy with my P10 I might opt for a lighter version...or go with a short hose only cozy. Since I manage well enough adjusting the hose air temp...I deal with rain out prevention that way. Though I may have to put on the barrel cozy...I am maxed out on hose temp and still getting a tiny bit of moisture collecting in the pillow...and while it doesn't really annoy me my husband mentioned the noise the other night...so I guess it annoyed him.
I slept through it but I guess he didn't.

With your mask that hose cozy weight may not be an issue for you. Just have to try it and see. The Nuance headgear is less likely to get yanked on than my P10 headgear. Just have to try it and see what happens.

Cool- thanks!

Also I've been using the loop at the top of the mask to feed the short hose through to go above/behind my head and then hanging it through a bedside hose holder. I think that might help with the pull of the weight.

Speaking of - I was meaning to ask you - any drawbacks to using a hose management system. Specifically, having the hose go up so high and then hang down to me - any disadvantages regarding efficacy of treatment having the hose angled this way? I assume it's another personal preference thing but wanted to check.

This is the one I'm using

As a more direct answer, YMMV is short for "your mileage may vary".

I have my CPAP machine on my headboard above me with no issues.

Personal preference on the hose management system. No drawbacks in terms of therapy effectiveness unless using it causes sleep quality issues. But the reason most people use a hose management system is to improve sleep quality from less hose annoyance....so whatever works is fine.

I tried routing the hose over the head a few times. For me it was more annoying having it up over head than having it routed around my bed pillow. So I quite trying.
But I know that it helps a lot of people to have that hose out of the way and whatever way they want to use and it helps with sleep quality is just fine to do.
