4 year old BiPAP Mask help

Post by waverlysmom » Mon Feb 19, 2018 10:17 am

I have a 4 year old, 30 pound daughter with Down Syndrome. She has had several sleep studies and has been diagnosed with severe OSA. She has already had her tonsils and adenoids removed with no relief. Her sleep doctor has recommended that she go on BiPAP due to her carbon dioxide levels. I am needing ideas for a mask for her to use. She is a heavy mouth breather at times.

Thanks in advance

I don't know about pediatric masks, but I do know the Snugglehose.com has a pediatric line of speciality items that might help you.

The Philips Wisp Pediatric nasal mask is a good starting place. Usually more comfortable and not as daunting. She may end up breathing through her nose just fine, given adequate support with bi-level. If she sleeps in the lab (with you accompanying her) for a titration they will be able to tell if she is still breathing through the mouth.

I believe that this is a common complication of Down's Syndrome. Have you spoken to specialists in Down's Syndrome and/or other parents of Down's Syndrome children?

I believe Circadiance was developing a pediatric cloth Sleepweaver mask.

It will need to be a mask that covers the mouth as well. You would be best working with a DME with an exchange policy. mask fit is so very important, especially with a child.
she is going for a sleep study for the bpap to get the o2 right, so they may have some ideas about masks.

Getting any 4 year old to wear a mask is going to be a challenge and learning curve for everyone, give it a couple of months, don't get the idea that it will be sorted in a week.
