Putting on a mask with dexterity challenges

Post by debbiev » Sat Feb 03, 2018 3:20 pm

Hello.

My father wears the ResMed Mirage Quattro™ Full Face CPAP Mask with Headgear. It's a fairly new mask for him and he also suffers from Alzheimer's. He is having trouble putting the mask on himself, due to the various velcro straps and the two clips.

Does anyone have suggestions for a simpler headgear system?

Thanks!
Debbie

Once the Velcro is adjusted, it can be sewn in place, to stop messing the adjustment up. There are lots of clips, some are easier than others. I would go to a DME and see if they will work with you on getting a mask and clip that will work with your father. There are easier ones than the mirage.

Have you looked at the ResMed F20 mask? The clips are magnetic and are very easy to engage and dis engage to remove the mask.

Like said, take a look at the various Resmed masks. You slip the headgear over your head and the lower straps have a magnet. All you have to do it get them close and they attach themselves.

I don't know if it help but I use Dreamwear nasal cushions. Once set I don't make any adjustments. Just put it on head with no fine motor control needed.

Supposedly elderly and people with dexterity problems were exactly who the F20 was designed for. I'm 38 and I have a lot of trouble getting the fiddly magnetic bits to go where they're supposed to. In theory you just get them close and they snap into place, and when you've got the mask off they do absolutely that, but when putting it on your head, you have to physically pull the magnetic tab into place, and you have a very tiny area where it'll attach.

As opposed to my old Resmed Quattro air where you just get the two velcro strap loops, and pull them over very simple hooks on the mask frame. Very secure. I could do this one-handed in the dark while I was holding a sleeping baby.

It always helps if you can try them out first. You may really like the magnetic clasps.

Cpap.com (forum sponsors) have this headgear that might work for your dad:

"The Blue Mesh Softcap Headgear for CPAP Masks is a reusable headstrap designed for use with nasal and full face CPAP masks. The headgear comes with a Single Quick Clip, to make getting in and out easy. This strap headgear is a lasting product. The elastic is fairly strong and is therefore not suggested with very soft cushion masks. "

Have you looked at the P-R DreamWear mask? Here is a link to the P-R site.
DreamWear Mask
it looks as if, once adjusted, it just pulls on - no clips, straps, etc.

The O.P. did not say if her father lives alone. I worry even more whether he will remember to set up the machine properly, put the mask on, and leave it on all night. Even if he doesn't have advanced Alzheimer's, what will happen as the disease progresses?
