Sleeping for 9-11 Hours a day even with CPAP, Help!

Post by archerhahn » Fri Jan 26, 2018 5:42 pm

Hello, I am new to this forum, I apologize if this is not the correct format to ask questions.

I have been using CPAP since October religiously, hitting 90-100 in MyAir Score every night. It says that my AHI is 3.2 events per hour. According to the data, it seems like I'm getting amazing sleep. However, I have trouble waking up unless I sleep 10+ hours everyday, and I still feel a bit sluggish. I feel sleepy and unmotivated. I feel semi-great only around once a week. I'm getting frustrated because I cannot afford to sleep 11 hours everyday, did anyone have a similar problem? What's the problem? If anyone can provide insight on this, I would be very grateful.

EDIT: Just to add on, I'm a 22 year old male that does not have any health issues other wise. I'm using AirSense 10 Auto Set.

EDIT 2: Here are my sleepyhead data, if anyone could help me interpret it I would appreciate it!

Do you take any medications of any kind, if so...what?
Any other health conditions?

Hi, I really appreciate your reply. I have no medications. I'm a 22 year old male, pretty healthy otherwise this issue. I'm using ResMed 10.

How many times do you remember waking during those 9 to 11 hours of sleep?

Have you had a complete work up/physical otherwise where the usual labs and stuff were done recently?

No, I haven't done anything like that in the past 4 months. I don't remember waking up during those 9-11 hours of sleep. My doctor lowered the pressure from (4-12) to (4-10) pretty recently because my stomach would hurt from all the air when I woke up in the morning. I hope this information helps.

Are you using available software to see what is happening each night?
If not...get it.
https://sleep.tnet.com/equipment

While the AHI of 3 ish isn't bad...maybe there is something else going on in conjunction with it or maybe there is some clustering going on where you have periods of time with not much going on and the heavily clustered groups but the overall AHI is brought down by the times with not much happening.
Might also be something show up that isn't included in the AHI.

See this

With the settings of 4 to 10...maybe a lot of fluctuation of the pressure is going on which could maybe be disturbing sleep to some extent.

Thank you for your help, I will download the software. However, what do you suggest me to do to arrive at the solution? Should I schedule a meeting with a doctor once more and hopefully be able to get a in-facility sleep study? If anyone else went through this problem, I would love to know if it was resolved.

I have no idea how to resolve the problem because I have no idea what could be causing it.
We eliminated medication side effects since you aren't on any meds.
We eliminated poor sleep quality since you don't report a gazillion wake ups during the night.
So the 2 most common culprits...we eliminated. Now more detective work needs to be done and the first thing is review the software reports to see if anything stands out. Sometimes it's not all about the AHI but about a combination of things.
And of course sometimes it's not about sleep apnea or cpap therapy at all.

We can't fix a problem until we know what the problem is.

I'm one of those people that had many health problems and felt awful with 3-5AHI range. The doctors consider this good. It was absolutely horrible for me. I thought I was going to die. I didn't feel decent or well until I slept 11-12hrs per day, which I very rarely was able to do.

The people here helped me study the data from my machine and figure out that I was still having quite a few apnea events. They thought I should try increasing the pressure to reduce the number of events and see what happens. We got my AHI down to to around 1 and I feel so much better. Like a normal person again. Now I can even tell the difference in how I feel when AHI gets to around 2, which is pretty rare.

This may not be the answer for you, but you won't know until you can look at your data and see what's going on. The Sleepyhead software has been a tremendous help to a lot of people in that it lets us look at our machine data and take control of our therapy.

The data only says something about how you are breathing. It says nothing about the quantity or quality of sleep.

Typically, we next look at the Sleepyhead detail for a night or two.

Hello, thanks for your reply. I've downloaded Sleepyhead but I have no idea how to take the SD card out of CPAP machine then analyze it using my Macbook Pro... Is there anywhere I can get step-by-step directions?

It should help you. A minimum pressure of 4 is not often optimal. It's too low for most people. Let's see those SH details. It might be easy to do some tweaking and achieve more sound sleep and better recovery in fewer hours of sleep.
