How does a CPAP machine register sleep cycles?

Post by SBarrett » Thu Jan 25, 2018 9:26 pm

I don't know how to phrase this question to search the forum. During the home sleep study (3) and especially the hospital titration study data was accumulated with all the lead attachments (32), but if the only connection to my DreamStation is a heated hose, how is information about sleep patterns, hypopneas, and apneas recorded?

There are sensors in the machine that measure air flow and that's how they come up with the various apnea events...hyponeas, OAs, Centrals/CAs etc.

There are no such sensors for sleep evaluation. These machines don't know if you are asleep or awake or what sleep stage and they don't report sleep status at all.

The short answer is that it doesn't!

There is no technology on the market at this time that can detect sleep phases (or even when you're asleep). They can only detect if you have the mask on, leaks, and "events."

Wrong, just not on XPAPS! No, just works for the uninformed. Jim
