Question for those who use supplemental oxygen

Post by USMCVet » Tue Jan 23, 2018 4:47 am

Today I get a oxygen concentrator delivered. Just curious if I should notice a big difference tomorrow after sleeping with it?

I don't think your question can be answered without you saying how low your
desats were and the % of time they lasted. In my case my desats wern't terabily
low or stay there very long and I don't feal any difference if I skip using the oxygen
for a day or two. But I expect if my desats were in the 70's I would feal diferent
if I skiped the oxygen a day or 2. I was perscribed oxygen with cpap at the same
time so I can't realy seperate which helped more but after a month or 2 my brain
fog lifted and my memory was a lot better. Funny now at 67 years old my memory
is a lot better than it was 11 years ago !

Out of 9 minutes and 23 seconds I was under 88% for 93 minutes with a low of 79% and under 90% for 55% of time.

I have no personal experience but I can't help but feeling certain you'll notice a significant improvement for the better.

Did you persuade the VA to prescribe it or did you have to go outside the VA?

I went to place that diagnosed me with sleep apnea and they requested the VA give me oxygen at least until I have titration study done to see if maybe a Bipap will help my oxygen without need for supplemental oxygen

As one who hails from Denver, CO I can confirm that measured oxygen sat. numbers of 85, 86 & 90 or mentioning sub-90 sat levels doesn't raise many eyebrows at the VA here. Yet I personally know I'm a superior candidate for the clinically befuddled at 85% for any length of time. Hard telling where USMCVet is as profile doesn't have that info but thought I'd bring it up as it doesn't seem to have been mentioned, least in this particular thread. Of course there's just as much oxygen here as at sea level but it's a LOT harder to absorb or get onboard!

On at sea level pretty much. VA guidelines are same as medicare.

I doubt it.

If I were to use a battery analogy I'm probably around 15 to 20% charged depending on the day. I'd be happy with 40% or better after a couple days

Anxious to hear about how your first night with supplemental oxygen turned out.

Here is oximetry report from first night
https://i.imgur.com/Vj5LifA.jpg
I woke up a decent amount but that was probably because I kept checking my 02 level.
No morning headache which is good. A lot more coughing though when I first woke up. More shortness of breath today in general. Still really tired however mentally I'm feeling better.

I imagine you're pretty pleased with those O2 saturation figures. It may take your body a while to repair the damage O2 starvation has done in the past. My O2 problem was never as bad as yours and I'm only gradually seeing small improvements in how I feel. I wouldn't mind a few of your 93+ readings.

Excellent oxygen levels.

Your hear rate seems a little erratic but you mentioned that you woke up a lot. That could explain it. A low of 49 beats per minute is a little low, but for a person like you in excellent physical condition it is about right...

I may be 33 and wish I was in excellent condition but I'm not. Maybe I don't think I am from severe sleep apnea an nocturnal Hypoxemia but who knows. My school banner in gym said 7 days without exercise makes one weak. It's been a couple months.....
