Data charge for resmed air 10?

Post by Mzdocb » Mon Jan 15, 2018 2:54 pm

Just received my resmed air 10 cpap and Choice Medical of Abilene TX wants to charge a one time "Data Charge" of $25.00 to 'connect to the resmed computer'.They said my insurance company requires compliance data, which they have never requested in the past 7 years I've been on CPAP and all I needed from United Insurance to replace my old machine was a letter from my doc saying it was necessary and I was compliant. They did not bill my insurance 'because they won't pay it'. I told them it should have been submitted with all the other charges, and if they didn't pay, at least I would have an EOB to find out why. Keep in mind I have the free resmed app which gives me compliance data, number of apneic episodes etc. so I can submit that info on my own if ever required. Has anyone else been charged an extra fee for their company to access the resmed site? I am NOT on medicare.

Phoney charge...they know the insurance will not pay it. I'm sure they have tried many times.
The machine they gave you...I hope it was not the Airsense 10 CPAP model....You want the Autoset, or, at least, the Elite model.

If a dme (supplier) tells you its 12am... go and look outside, all they do to get more moola is lie. You do not and I repeat do not need to pay them one cent to connect you to Resmeds site or supply data to your insurance . Others will be on here shortly and tell you their scary stories about their dme... in the meantime WELCOME to the forum... and it won't cost you a penny
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

If the insurance company paid for the machine they can ask for an indication of compliance. That part is OK.

Paying to provide that compliance seems a bit off. Ask if there is a lower cost (like $0.00) alternative.

Change DME's as soon as possible.
This is very much a bogus charge.
They do not deserve your or anyone else's business.

Contact your insurance company and ask if they require compliance documentation, and if they do, in what form.

If compliance data is required, in most cases unless you are using compliance for Department of Transportation licensure, the doctor just has to certify that you are using it the required amount. So the doctor could get that information from any source, including printouts you make yourself.

If data is not required, then inform your DME in writing why you will not pay that charge. If they persist in charging you and try to send you to collection, send a copy of the letter to the state agency that regulates the DME and put in a fraud claim with your insurer.

Just send them a letter denying the charge. Explain that your insurance company does not require compliance data and there is no reason for your machine to be 'hooked up' to Resmed for downloading. These machines are automatically registered with Resmed when the DME receives it.

I do get later downloads of info costs employee time, so that fee wouldn't be out of line if they NEEDED to provide such info. But your insurance doesn't require it, so for you, the fee is not valid.

Any time technology advances in some way, those who profit in providing products and services related to them find new ways to monetize the change. Then they do everything they can to make you think it is in your best interest or is required. Profit is a powerful motive for innovative billing.
1) your example: ResMed adds MyAir as a means of uploading compliance data in the background - the DME's question internally is "how can we charge for this?"
2) ResMed introduces the AS10 series that has an integrated humidifier as standard - DMEs then dis-integrate the humidifier and charge separately for the humidifier in spite of the fact that one cannot buy the machine without the humidifier - nor can they use it without the humidifier or a plug to bypass the humidifier.
