Some people smoke in order to keep their weight down. That's not an approach I endorse medically either.

Exactly! I actually had gut issues for a while too... turns out I was sensitive to about 6 different foods, the gut issues become so bad I lost 40 lbs, but I'd never go back to the way I felt while eating the bad foods, Hungry all the time due to malnutrition, brain fog, etc. and that was on top of the apnea.
Instead of Sleep apnea it should be called "Sleep deprivation, starving of oxygen, being poisoned by high CO2 levels, damaging the body and brain while it's supposed to be healing so that you constantly get worse and can never get healthy Apnea"
