12 years of treated Sleep Apnea, is the reason I've had to use XPAP for 12 years, without it I would be dead long ago, is that the complication you are looking for, if so it is. Jim

I don't think you will find too many members here with 20+ years experience....maybe 1 or 2. Why would you expect complications?

20 years of CPAP use will make your lungs age 20 years.

I have asthma and for a few years after the diagnosis I tried to ignore it until a really bad exacerbation scared the pants off me. So I did some research and found that poorly controlled asthma can "remodel" the lungs and cause long-term damage, COPD. I felt like I was headed in that direction. My research "scared me straight" and I started to work really hard on asthma control.

So now I've been on CPAP 6 + years. My asthma is almost non-existent--not just because of CPAP, but CPAP is a big factor, IMHO. My lungs are 1000% better than they were six years ago. I see CPAP as only a positive, rather than a negative for long term use. Consider the alternative--sleeping all night at very low oxygen saturation level cannot be good for lungs, muscles, heart, and brain over a 20 year span. I can't imagine any "long-term pulmonary complications" that would trump those.

Honestly, you are new here and we don't know you but I'm going to make a guess that you are fighting the idea of having to use "this CPAP thing" for the "rest of your life". My advice is don't. Use it for tonight only. Tomorrow, use it for that night only. And every night after. If you look down the long road it can appear daunting. But all you have to worry about is tonight. Over time those "tonights" will add up to a lifetime you won't even notice.

if this is going towards pressure on your lungs, there is none. ventilators do that. the cpap simply splints or assists in keeping the airway open. the highest cpap pressures are very low in the .3 psi range. not nearly enough to blow up a balloon.

by asking the question, you must have something in mind. what kind of complications do you think there would be?

WTF?!?!?!

The "complications" would arise from NOT using CPAP/APAP/Bi-Level therapy.

search.php?keywords=%22pulmonary+complications%22

Better health and longer life would not be considered "adverse" effects from this therapy.

So, to answer your question........NONE!

To reiterate: NONE, or pretty much all positive.
Are you looking for excuses to quit cpap?

I personally don't know of any members with 20 years of cpap use. However, it doesn't make any sense to me that breathing in air would cause pulmonary complications... unless your pressures are excessively high... in which case, I would have thought it would have been noticed way before any possible complications occurred.
