Hey all,
I picked up a loaner ( resmed auto sense) fome advanced home care to use for in home titration.
Last night was my first night with the machine. I could not sleep with it due to a powerful musky perfume smell. I dont know if they clean it with such or the previous user had tried to freshen it up.
Now my mask hose and all is soaked in this odor. Im supposed to be using this for titration but I cant stand it.
Wonder if I could wash my hose and mask with baking soda or vinegar solution and use my old machine till they open back up tuesday. Will this mess up their titration study?

Loaner machine for titration has strong perfume odor
Re: Loaner machine for titration has strong perfume odor
If you are a CPAP user and have a machine...why the titration? Do you have SD card in your old machine that could provide data?

Re: Loaner machine for titration has strong perfume odor
If it were me, I would clean everything and use my own machine. I am asthmatic and perfume is one of my triggers that will put me into an asthma attack. Call them as soon as they open and tell them you could not use the machine because they did not adequately clean it before giving it to you and you need a different machine to use for the titration study. The machine I am currently using was used for a short period of time by someone else, but when I got it I couldn't tell the difference between it and a new machine. There were no lingering odors coming from the machine.

The titration is because I've lost almost 100 pounds since I started on CPAP therapy. I am to 'll d by family members that I dont snore anymore. My machine is set so high that it is hard to keep a good seal. If titration shows that my apnea has improved due tl weight loss, I may be able to have less pressure on my machine improving seals and making sleep a little more comfortable.

I've smelled a powdery perfumey smell on many cpaps, brand new, I've come to the conclusion it's the silicone inside offgassing, and when the machine isn't being used regularly, the smell builds up.Spray14 wrote:Hey all,

Re: Loaner machine for titration has strong perfume odor
I had loaner equipment for the first month I was on therapy, and had the same experience with a strong perfume-cum-curry odour in the mask. I mentioned it right away to the RT when I was issued it, but she didn't actually take a whiff herself, so thought it was just the usual off-gassing of the silicone. She had told me they carefully clean loaner equipment between patients, so although still a bit puzzled, I used the equipment and thoroughly washed the mask every single day with both mild dish detergent and white vinegar. After about 10 days, the odour finally disappeared. I reiterated the problem to the RT when I returned the loaner stuff, and she just gave me an "isn't that odd?!" kind of reaction. It's the only time I've had an issue with this supplier; everything else has been handled with excellent service. If I ever decide to try a different mask and am offered a loaner again, I will certainly smell it first and not take it home unless it's perfume-free!
If your inability to use the machine due to the odour does mess up the titration, that's not on you; it's on them for not ensuring appropriate cleaning of the equipment between patients. Let us know what they have to say when you contact them on Tuesday.
