CBD Oil for sleep?

Post by Janknitz » Tue Dec 26, 2017 2:59 pm

I'm having some sleep issues. A big part of it is stress but I have almost always woken about 4 - 4:30 a.m. Since I started CPAP I've been able to fall right back to sleep, but now I'm having more trouble falling back to sleep and staying asleep. I wake several times a night now, and sometimes cannot fall back to sleep. My husband isn't sleeping well either and I'm not sure who wakes up whom, but we are both feeling pretty miserable. I am really dragging my wagon from poor sleep.

We are both taking magnesium, and he uses OTC herbal sleep aids (e.g. Valerian, chamomile, etc) plus Trazadone. I use melatonin occasionally (seems to help if I'm not overly stressed) and sometimes his herbal supplements (I don't see that they really help).

On the radio I heard an integrative MD talk about good results from using hemp-based CBD oil--the type you can legally buy everywhere. She also praised marijuana based CBD oil which will be legal to purchase in California after January 1. I looked on Amazon and found a lot of hemp oil, but no guarantee that any of it contained the legal form of CBD oil. So I'm willing to buy the MJ based stuff after January 1 because a lot of the retailers do guarantee the CBD content, if it will help (and if I can find it).

I'm wondering if anybody has any experience with it? Did it help? Did it cause a hangover or other negative side effects?

I'm someone who never EVER experimented with marijuana, it was just not something I was ever interested in trying (yes, I am a goody two shoes, never took so much as a puff of a tobacco cigarette, either!), so I have no experience with it at all. But in the lead up to legalization, our local papers have been full of the beneficial effects of medical marijuana, and local doctors I know praise it's benefits in some patient populations, so I'm not opposed to it on principle or anything. I'd just be interested in hearing others' experiences.

I got a couple of samples of a high-quality hemp CBD oil last September. The taste was awful. What I really didn't like was how it made me feel. It was a weird combination of sleepy and wired at the same time. I have seen in past discussions that there are people who like it, so apparently the reaction can be quite individual. I was grateful I was able to get the samples prior to buying the oil, which is expensive.

Thanks, that's what I'm interested in hearing. I'm pretty sensitive to things, so I will proceed with caution.

Any hints on how to get samples?

I've heard when states turn legal there's a big run on product. They haven't even really worked out who is permitted to sell--I'm not sure the medical dispensaries are going to be able to sell retail. So I think it may be a while before it can be reliably purchased anyway.

I'm hoping I can buy it in capsule form, so I don't have to taste it.

The oil I tried was made by Green Roads Wellness. If you look them up you'll see it's fearfully expensive. It's a hemp oil. My suspicion is that you have to have the real deal, meaning marijuana-based CBD, to get the goods. However so many of our states haven't legalized it that hemp is our only option. I am unaware of any studies comparing the oils.

I have an acquaintance who was coming to town for an expo and she's been selling the Green Roads brand. I'd emailed her to ask about samples, since I didn't really want to drop $140 or more for something I'd never tried, and she had two syringes, each with one dose and each sealed by the company that she sold me for $5 each. Possibly if you can find a Green Roads rep you could do the same. I felt bad because she was eagerly asking me if I liked the oil and I couldn't bring myself to tell her that I didn't like it at all. I had high hopes for it since I have chronic pain issues in addition to sleep issues, but alas. I don't have any hope of trying marijuana-based CBD because of legal issues, etc.

I will add, btw, that Trazodone is the only reason I get any sleep at all. I take a very small dose, just 1/4 of a 25 mg tablet. At that low dose it has no side effects. I don't believe it's a placebo effect because about once or twice a year I have a really bad night where I toss and turn and wake up at 3AM and feel like I never go into deep sleep, and the next morning I'll check and realize I forgot to take the Trazodone the previous night. With it, I go to sleep and stay asleep.

I live in CA where things will be very different Jan. 1. I understand there is a run on getting a medical card for MJ, which is what you need to be able to get into a dispensary. And, like doctors, all dispensaries are not the same. Some just want to sell MJ and push you out the door. Others ask what you intend to use it for and work with you getting the right combination. And, like any medication, we are all different so what works for one person to help with pain/sleep issues maybe won't work for another.

I'm looking forward to Jan. 1, so I won't have to be so concerned about asking questions and getting knowledgeable answers.

No hangover for me, totally refreshed the next morning, not like alcohol. Of course this was in my teen years but I still remember...
