F&P Simplus condensation noise

Post by Irritator » Fri Dec 15, 2017 3:02 pm

Greetings,

I've seen several posts here discussing whistling/wheezing noise from the Simplus masks, but the solutions (turn humidity down, replace cushion etc) don't seem to work for me.

I have been using the Simplus for a year now, changing masks and cushions regularly. Since the beginning, after a few hours of sleep I hear whistling and wheezing from the vent holes in the cushion. It's not enough to wake up my partner, but being in such close proximity to my ears, it wakes me up. I just figured this was normal so I lived with it. I have since found out that this is NOT the way the mask is supposed to perform. It's quite bothersome. It has to do with condensation from my breath, not the humidifier.

The fit is fine. No leaks. It doesn't do this when being fitted at my doctors or the supply shop. Only after sleeping for a few hours. Thinking it might be the humidity setting, I turned it off for a few nights. It made no difference. I can remove the cushion and wipe the inside of the vent holes with a tissue, and all is well for the next two or 3 hours, then I have to repeat the process. I have tried new cushions. They do the same thing. On one of my old, discarded cushions, I tried drilling the bottom 8 holes (6 on bottom row and one on each side on the second row) ever so slightly, just a very very tiny barely oversized drill bit. This solved the noise/condensation issue, but (I believe) confused the CPAP machine (Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset) and it was pushing higher than normal pressures which was also very uncomfortable.

I have since tried the Airfit 10 and was completely dissatisfied with the fit. I have also tried the Airfit 20 which is what I have been using for the past 3 weeks. It fits much better than the AF10, but not as well as the Simplus. I would really like to return to the Simplus, but the noise is just too much for me.

Has anyone found a solution or modification that might solve this issue?

Thank you.

Have you taken a pin of some kind and re-poked the vent holes to be sure they're clear?

Also, on my mask (otherwise very diff) the little rubber piece with vent holes fits into the hard plastic frame, but sometimes there's a bit of noise if the thing isn't well seated and I play around til it improves. Don't know if there's anything comparable on yours, but maybe worth a look.

Yes, I have the same issue: when there is too much humidity, then the Simplus makes some whistling noise.

It only happens however when I try to set the humidity manually in the ResMed A10 machine: when humidity is set to automatic, then I don't have too much humidity in the mask.

Condensation at the mask level can happen even when a person doesn't use a humidifier or water in the water chamber.
See posts # 2 and 3 in this thread for various options in how to eliminate that annoyance.

Easiest fix...make use of a heated hose.
If you don't have a heated hose...get one.
If you have a heated hose already....increase the hose air temp.
