A strange problem ...

Post by Oltremare » Sat Nov 04, 2017 3:50 pm

Good evening at all.

For some days I have been running a very annoying cold that forces me to a massive use of nose handkerchiefs.
Come on and off, I've probably damaged a few capillaries and I've already had two intense epistaxis, the first Thursday morning and the last one this evening, a few minutes ago.
It happened suddenly but I was not touching or blowing my nose at that time.
Now I think, what do I do with my mask tonight? Do I pretend anything and go to sleep as it's all normal?
I realize I ask you a very extravagant thing but believe me, I'm very disoriented, I do not mean to be worried though ...
I checked the pressure and it's great 118/81; I don't take anticoagulant medicines, in short, I'm just worried that the pressure levels that reach me to 18 cmH2O can trigger a new event.
I understand the strangeness of the question but this forum can be very useful for these "out of standard" that is almost impossible at 10pm on Saturday evening to be clarified by a specialist.
Thank you for your kind attention.

Me too have had a serous cold and sinus infection but still use my machine every night regardless of how stuffed up I am. Keep on doing what you are doing, YOU will win in the long run.
Good lucki

Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

I doubt your nose bleeds are XPAP related, Blowing your nose can be traumatic if the vessels are compromised by any irritation. When I have bleeding issues, I just sleep as normal. I've not had a bleeding episode in my mask (I am on anti-coagulants).

Good luck

Nasal irrigation with a saline solution may provide help.

I can't address this from a medical point of view, but from physics: a pressure of 18 cm H2O corresponds to a barometric pressure change of about 0.5 inches Hg - sizable but well within normal fluctuations. Its also about the pressure change you'd have taking an elevator down about 50 flights. It would seem a bit unlikely this would cause nosebleeds. Also, once the base pressure is established, the fluctuations are pretty slow. As has been pointed out, this is nothing compared to a sneeze.

After writing this I remembered getting a nasty nosebleed coming down the Buffalo Bill Cody highway in Wyoming, where you descend about 2000 feet in 45 miles. This was on a family trip about 50 years ago; my brother still doesn't let me forget.

Hello to all
Oltremare
=============

you need to see a doctor about the nose issues

i doubt that the xpap pressure will cause any of those things
sounds liek pollen and allergies causing you to clear the nose too forcefully and breaking weak blood vessels

see a doctor
Thanks for your contribution but I will see the doctor next Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile I would have to spend 2 nights with APAP, I was wondering for these two nights.

Thank you

A little late ...... You are probably blowing your nose too hard and probably the air is too dry. Try more humidity, in your home and xpap. Apparently you should only blow one side at a time. And a nasal rinse regularly until your cold is gone.

And, of course, drink plenty of fluids.

Take care and get well soon.

Thank you all for your contributions.
The first night I fell asleep on the couch reading the comments on this forum and I didn't use APAP.
This morning I had the ideas much clearer and next night I will not repeat the same mistake!
My mask is already on the pillow.

Thank you all

For what it's worth!!!!! I too was having sudden, unexplained nose bleeds. All from the right nostril. Happened driving the freeway once. Doctor said to swab " Neosporin " on a Q-tip around inside nostril morning and night. No problems for a year or so and then, setting here at the computer a few days ago, from the left nostril, had a massive bleed. Had not been blowing nose or picking buggers!!! For a while I thought it wasn't going to stop. Finally got it stopped and started Neosporin in both sides of nose and so far, no new bleeds from either side of nose.

This is not medical advice, just relating what happened to me!!!
