Philips RI water chamber Metal Plate/Plastic Breaking

Post by abbykrist » Tue Oct 31, 2017 8:22 am

I use the Respironics Philips RI water chamber for my heated CPAP - System One. Machine is 4 1/2 years.

I noticed in August the plastic molded pieces which hold the metal plate to the plastic chamber (on the bottom of the water chamber) broke off causing the chamber to leak and not be usable. The chamber was a month old!!

I called the company my insurance uses (Apria) and they said that nobody has had problems with it but agreed to send me a replacement at no charge as I said it's clearly defective. A month later 9/26, same thing happened. I contacted the Chief Procurement Officer and he had Customer Service send me another new one. On my own dime I purchased two others. Now (Oct 26) the SAME THING has happened. a few nights ago I noticed one of the 6 pieces came off and another was kinda bent.... two nights later the "bent" one was fixed and another came off... when looking at it the bent one came off. Why are these water chambers only lasting a month?

Since the first replacement I BARELY touch the metal plate when cleaning it (mild detergent and H20 - - every other night).

I cannot believe nobody else has had issues with this happening!

Has anyone had issues or have thoughts on what's happening??

I haven't had this particular problem, but Medicare considers the water chamber disposable and pays for a new one every 6 months.

+1 -- MOST insurance plans allow for replacement at least every 6 months or 1 year, so yours has definitely exceeded its expected life. I had my first water chamber for a little over 2 years and replaced it solely because it had scale buildup (my tap water is not the best)

The OP indicated in his post that all the water chambers were less than 1 month old.

Oh! That's completely different. Never mind.

But, in that case, it should be replaced with no hassle. With any cheap plastic fabrication there's a chance of such a problem. Also, if the chambers had been replaced regularly, there should be a stash as backup.
