CMS50F is crap made in China

As with most Chinese made electronics the battery is usually crap. Mine lasted one day and after that I could not recharge it. It turned green (light on device) but when I plugged it onto the USB it turned orange right away! Further, it after the first day, NEVER recognized the unit (presumably because of low power). Bluetooth never worked. So I returned it. So now I need to spend more money. CMS 50F was $89! Not cheap if you consider where it was made....

that was bad luck, I've had mine for 12 months and it's going strong.

I'm so sorry that your experience with the CMS50F was so bad! I had one for several years and had no problems with it. When it gave out, it was the screen that went, not the battery. Maybe you just got a bad one?? Again, so sorry.

Unfortunately, after a few decades of out-sourcing our economy for corporate profits, all our crap now comes from China.

But hey! At least all our phone support services for insurance and credit cards and such still come from India and Pakistan ...

Let's not overlook the common habit of the consumer in choosing the cheapest option available. If everyone were willing to pay the price required to produce a product at home there wouldn't be an incentive to manufacture in China and elsewhere. A bit of a catch 22.

I've had mine for a couple of years with no problems.

As long as no one is willing to pay "american" prices, foreign countries will continue making the goods.

I got mine from another member here.. so WELL used. Mine only died when I pugged it back in and somehow screwed up the pins ... my bad .

Maybe if unions stopped asking for bigger wages and benefits , things would not cost so much. Unions have priced out goods in the U.S and Canada. So, no, some people have to find the lowest price no matter where its made to make ends meet.

If the CMS 50F is garbage, what consumer available model is considered a decent one in the 'hundreds' range?

there is a high failure rate
most electronics have a 10-20% doa at the big box store
the 50f is closer to 40-50% bad even if not doa

Is there a source for this stat? If consumer reports are saying it is this bad why are they still on the market?

I would strongly recommend that you do some independent research before believing this is garbage. Many of us have had pretty good luck with it.

I bought this in August online from a great US store. May still be made in China, but I bought it from store in the US. I've never had any problems with it and it works great with Sleephead. A few questions on how something worked, which someone here answered, but no actual problems at all.
