There is another type of 'fine' filter that normally goes in with the other one, and it's supposed to pick up things the orig. one doesn't - maybe ask your DME about getting those.

And what about asking your dealer to look into the fire/smoke damage thing and if necessary replace the unit.

Why do you refer to CA as being 'far across the pond'? Do you mean from Japan, or the E. coast?

The CPAP is not the cause of your asthma. The timing of the onset is just coincidental. I vaguely remember having asthma symptoms when I was a child, and during my twenties and thirties. I did not start exhibiting full on symptoms until I turned fifty. I was on a business trip and developed a wheezing and cough that would not control. I called my wife and had her set up a doctor appointment for me so I could stop and see the doctor once my plane landed. At that time I was diagnosed with asthma and started treatment. I normally have less symptoms when using my machine. However, I did have an attack last spring and ended up in the emergency room at the local hospital before I could get it under control.

I am only a couple of years into CPAP treatment. I have also never had any asthma symptoms, until CPAP.

It wasn't until I spent a weekend away, in the country, and I chose not to use my CPAP for two nights that I realized the source of my incessant cough. It's the CPAP, or the damn filters most like. If I could afford it, I would change out the unwashable filter on my CPAP every single day. Leave the filter in too long and it ends up just concentrating any and all allergens through that one port. Your actual CPAP machine might be contaminated as well. I can't afford to buy a new one, at the moment, but I wish I had easier access to the fan and other ports inside the base machine just to clean them, not just the hoses, mask and humidifier.

I am calling from far across the pond in California, and I believe that the fires that we had here in 2018 just might have ruined my entire machine. But damp environments do generate much mold, that is hard to see, but it's all around us. The machine pushes a whole lot of air through it, pulling in literally everything.

I am now on Advair, Monteulkast and Zyrtec based on allergen conditions. Never had respiratory problem like this before using a CPAP.

1. why are some people scolded for not starting a fresh thread and others not?
Because Julie and some of the other who it annoys haven't seen it yet.

It doesn't bother me when I see one post like the recent post because I have my doubts as to where that person will even come back here or not and I simply don't waste my time until it looks like there's going to be an ongoing interaction.
Have you noticed how often we have 2 or 3 pages of discussion about something someone says and the person that started it never comes back to be part of the discussion. I got better things to do than talk to someone that hasn't come back yet.
Sometimes people just want to rant and they believe what they want to believe and won't listen to reason anyway.

I don’t know enough to say it’s impossible. But from my experience since 12/18/19 starting cpap I actually feel like my lungs are more clear. I know when I was having acid issues I did have that tight chest feelings and sometimes felt it was difficult to get good breath. That has all gone away since starting my therapy.

There could be a trigger in your house or bedroom, but CPAP does NOT cause asthma. If you think it's the filters, you can get the filters cheaply on Amazon. I got 52 filters for $12. I can change them every week, or even every day if I wish.

Your humidifier might be a trigger if it's causing you sinus symptoms. Try turning it down, or up and see which might help.

I have asthmatic bronchitis at the moment triggered by a cold I had a few weeks ago. I coughed my lungs up all day yesterday. But I had restful, peaceful sleep last night because reathing the properly humidified, filtered air always helps and CPAP soothes my airways. I don't cough much on CPAP. I remember the horrible years before CPAP I'd have to sleep sitting up in a chair when I had bronchitis, and I hardly slept. So grateful for CPAP and I sure didn't want to have to get up and turn it off this morning.
