Intermittent Problem with AirSense 10

Post by Comfortably Numb » Thu Oct 19, 2017 4:21 am

Three nights ago just after I put on my mask I noticed a different sound with my 7 month old AirSense 10. The unit produced a straining sound with each inhale/exhale. I drifted off to sleep, and several hours later I was awakened by the control panel light. The unit was still blowing air even though the light had come on by itself. I drifted back to sleep and upon awakening much later noticed that everything felt and sounded normal.

Two nights ago it was as though there had never been an issue. There was no unusual noise at start up and the unit performed without any problems.

Last night the problem returned with a vengeance. Not only did I notice the strained sound immediately on inhale/exhale, but the flow rate (blowing?) "felt" off the charts. The exhaust was so powerful that I couldn't stand the noise so I took the mask off after about 20 minutes and slept my first untreated night in 7 months.

I looked at my very limited data this morning and tried to compare it to the night before. The only thing that jumped out at me was the Flow Rate. Last night it got as high as 77.5. In the past it has stayed below 57.5. Mask pressures were the same from night to night.

I will be calling my DME this morning to see what I should do about getting a replacement, etc. but I'm wondering if there is anything I can try to further diagnose/correct the problem. Any ideas?

Not much we can do beyond some very basic stuff like reboot the whole thing (unplug from the electric source and then plug back in) and make sure all connections to everything are solid.
Sounds like something inside is ailing...sensor not regulating the blowing or the blower trying to die or something. I don't know much about the inside workings.
The failure rate of these machines is low but not 0. They do just up and get really sick and need to go to the hospital.

The flow rate is your own breathing and not the machine blowing rate. I don't know why it would be elevated more than normal unless you happen to be taking bigger gulps of air fighting the blowing of the machine.

Thanks for your comments, Pugsy. I actually did unplug/plug the unit after I first noticed the problem three days ago. We took a short road trip to see the Eagles, and the unit worked perfectly in the motel that night. But, I unplugged/plugged it again yesterday and the problem was even worse last night.

The most noticeable changes in the unit are the unusual straining sound at start up and the tremendous exhaust rate (noise).

Sounds like something inside is ailing and it needs a trip to the cpap hospital.
It should be under warranty and they just swap it out with a new machine. That's usually what is done when machines this new go dying.
