I haven't had this problem but I have read about it.
It has something to do with one side allowing more leakage of the air into the stomach do to position.
Similar to how some people have less heartburn issues when on one side primarily vs the other side.
Sometimes the LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter) is a bit lax and when on one side it doesn't allow as much leaking as on the other side.

I read that sleeping on the left side works with "inner plumbing" to help prevent aerophagia.
Somewhat effective, but at my age, I need to swap positions or wake up hurting.
Commando is out of the question, too.

If you look at a diagram of your anatomy...If you sleep on your left side, stomach acid can drain from esophagus to stomach. If you sleep on your right, stomach acid can drain from stomach to esophagus.

It also ignores the fact that constant sleeping on your side can cause skeletal problems. My Dad's back problems turned out to be caused by sleeping on his side for years (yes, he had apnea until his heart attack). I'm trying to relearn to sleep on my back for this reason, but I think I need a softer mattress to do it. Saving up for it.
