I flew twice this summer, and it depends a lot on the airport you’re in. Also, some of the rules for small electronics have changed, although not every airport is following the new rules yet.
At Newark Airport, I remind them that there’s a CPAP machine in my carry-on (it has a medical equipment tag as well as “CPAP” on a piece of masking tape on top), and they wave me right through, my bag comes out of the x-ray, and I’m on my way.
At Bangor, in Maine, I had to take out my CPAP, iPad, and Kindle, and put them together in a bin. They swabbed them all, presumably for explosives. I wasn’t expecting this; I would certainly have put my CPAP in a plastic bag first before putting it in the bin. These are the new rules. I think they’re extra careful at Bangor - always have been - because they get a lot of international and military flights.
Keep in mind that whatever they do, they’re not taking your CPAP away (they all know what it is and recognize the machines), and relax, let them do their jobs, say Please, Thank you, and Good Morning, and smile at them. Have a good rip!
