Urine smell in cpap water?

Post by puebloman » Wed Sep 27, 2017 1:28 pm

Last night, the distilled water i use in my cpap machine smelled like urine. The smell was clearly coming from the water (i only ever use distilled) I cleaned the reservoir out and the smell mostly went away, but I have no idea what may have caused this. Any ideas, has this happened to anyone else?

Lock your bedroom door.
And or, clean your HH, dump the distilled water daily and empty it out. All distilled water isn't the same, your supplier may be at fault, or it's been setting around too long. Jim

If the water in the jug smells, please tell us where you bought that NASTY water.
Icky sources need to be publicized.

I think it's a bacteria or fungus by-product. I've had it happen several times. I would imagine you can swipe your finger on the bottom of the humidifier and see a track where your finger moved. It's not a big deal. Clean the humidifier tank and replace with fresh water. I can't prove it, but it seems to happen to me when I cough while wearing the mask. I assume that's how the bacteria/fungus gets into the humidifier. Or heck, it may be from something in the bedroom. Anyway, good luck!

Spores in the tank. Probably that and nothing more.
A capful of cheap vodka in the last rinse water leaves mine with a nice, fresh smell.
Maybe another capful in my evening decaf . . .

One question. Do you have a cat?

I have a friend who tended to pee in corners of rooms when he drinks ( which he no longer does BTW). Almost cost him a divorce on his wedding night when he peed in front of his new bride. Anyway, heres to hoping you do not suffer a sleep peeing disorder which you resolve with the aid of your humidifier tank.

I'd bring my dog into the bedroom, and chain him to a tree in the back yard. I would keep his food and water pan clean, as long as he went to work days and brought home his pay check! if not I'd take him back to the Pound! Jim

This disgusting thing has happened to me as well and I do not think it is fungus etc. The reason I say that is because my daughter recently purchased some distilled water from the grocery store and I threw the cvs water out that was in it, only did a quick tap rinse, then checked with the new one and nothing! So that makes me suspect it is the water from cvs! It was disgusting! Now, here's the thing. I do not know if this is possible but you bet I'm going to try to find out by calling the board of health or someone because someone once told me that when they worked at a beer place locally many moons ago (we're talking like 35/40 years ago??) they said when the employees would get angry at the place they would throw cigarette (that's how you can tell it was long ago because you could smoke at work!) butts in and sometimes "other things" in it, including urine. That thought is (sorry guys) a little hard to get out of my head when I smell the distinct smell of urine in the water and in the plastic jug!! The thing that worries the heck out of me is God forbid it is true, can you get diseases by inhaling it and with Corona around now, who knows what could happen! I'm taking the rest of the jug and I'm going to see if I can get a government agency to analyze it. If there's an issue I will obviously report it back here but chances are you'll know about it before then from the agency. As for now, I'd suggest you put your cvs water aside and I'll get back to you regardless. I'm not going to say the name of the company because I'm not going to disparage a company before knowing if there's an issue. The net is permanent and I'm not in the business of putting people out of business with a story I was told 35/40 years ago! I'll let you know.
