new user and strange issues

I agree that it's all about personal preference, but, I will add that when I was experiencing sore nostrils where the gel pillow sat on my nose, it was because I had it on too tight. Tight may seem to be better, but, for me, it was not. It's actually more secure when it's not tight for me. The lanolin stuff may work for some, but, I had limited success with it, because my pillow was on too snug and that lanolin stuff smelled terrible to me. IT's not supposed to have an odor, but, mine did. Maybe, a bad batch. Once, I loosened up the fit, my soreness went away.
