When viewing my data via SleepyHead, one of the events it will show is Pressure Pulse Event. What does this mean? I understand that some machines use a pressure pulse to determine if the airway is clear or obstructed, but my pressure data shows no change - and it is not in conjunction with an apnea event.
Thanks

Re: Dreamstation APAP pressure pulse event
Pressure pulse events just means the machine wanted to check something out just in case whatever it is sensing ends up needing a name.
Obviously they are the machine's way of determining if the apnea event is central in nature or obstructive in nature.
You can have pressure pulse events happen without ever seeing an apnea flag associated with it. Maybe the machine senses a flow reduction and wonders what kind of reduction but maybe the reduction only lasts 9 seconds...Duration has to be at least 10 seconds.
Or maybe it sensed a reduction but the amount of reduction is rather border line and it never gets into the amount of reduction needed to earn a flag.
Like maybe the reduction is 38% and 40% is needed to earn a hyponea flag...so even if it lasted 30 seconds at 38% reduction...no flag.
Actual pressure changes...won't happen just from a pressure pulse being used.
Auto adjusting pressures are based on the algorithm. It can auto adjust and never have a pressure pulse be used at all because the machine didn't need that extra little bit of help identifying the reduction in flow.
And the other side can happen...we can have a large number of pressure pulses and the pressure never change.

Re: Dreamstation APAP pressure pulse event
Thanks for the response. Here is an image. I don't see an increase in pressure during the test. The reading I have done talks about a 1.5cm increase which I am not seeing.

Re: Dreamstation APAP pressure pulse event
Pressure pulses are very brief...like millisecond brief...puffs of air.
The 1.5 cm increases you read about aren't pressure pulses...they are test pressure probes and it's a very gradual up and gradual down if you were to zoom in real close.
I see the test pressure probes...those are the saw tooth spiky looking things on the pressure graph.
Pressure probes won't show up on the Events tab.
Pressure pulse...you only had the one and I don't think the 14 in parentheses means anything in the case of pressure pulse...they sure don't last 14 seconds.
Look at the pressure graph...the spiky increases...they are 1.5 cm increases and they are done just to test the waters. They are not done as part of the auto adjusting algorithm in response to any of the usual warning signs of the airway trying to collapse.
As to why they "test the waters"...beats me but it's the way Respironics does auto adjusting anything. They do the same thing on their BiPaps except I think the spike is 2.0 cm.

Re: Dreamstation APAP pressure pulse event
Thank you very much. Now it makes sense. The 1.5cm changes are used by the algorithm to determine if a pressure change is warranted and pressure pulses (too fast to see in the data) are used to define the event in case the event flag is triggered. So in my case the event never materialized to be flagged as an event but it is marked. I think the 14 means that the event lasted 14 seconds, perhaps not long enough to throw an event flag.
