Thanks Julie,
The paper has been followed up by more recent research in several other papers. See Oliver and Mangas 2007, for instance.
The fact that research has continued so heavily in area (particularly building on vasquez results, not arguing against it) tells me there is some usefulness to it. I'm sure you could see why they medical establishment might have a monetary incentive to not allow it. There are several mobile based devices using even more sophisticated methods being developed an almost ready to roll out as well.
