Woke up, machine on, hose disconnect from mask

Post by WearyOne » Tue Aug 08, 2017 9:06 am

Woke up at 6:45 to go to the bathroom this morning and discovered my hose had become disconnected from my mask. In SH today, I discovered I was "off the machine" for 1.5 hours. Can't believe I slept that long not hooked to the machine with my mask on. Wasn't gasping for air or anything. Guess that anti-asphyxiation valve thing on the mask works pretty good...thank goodness!

Actually if the hose got disconnected you had the hose opening along with the valve to help you out. Air will move in and out of the hose open end also. There's enough air movement to keep us comfortable enough to sleep well enough.

I once slept through a power outage with the mask on and no feelings of suffocating with my lips taped. This was a long time ago when I was using a nasal pillow mask with some good sized vent holes. Near as I could tell from the reports it was about 10 minutes.
Not sure I could move enough air now with the P10 and it's teeny tiny diffused vent holes. :lol

I once tested, while awake, just how long I could be comfortable just using the vent holes for air movement on a nasal pillow mask. I blocked the hose end of the mask with my hand and just breathed normally while wearing the nasal pillow mask (I think it was the Swift LT at the time) and I got bored after 30 minutes without any discomfort and abandoned the experiment. It helped me come to grips with taping my mouth which was something I originally didn't think I could do.

I just now tested the DreamWear Gel nasal pillows that I am playing with right now. I could do it but not as easily. The exhale is easy but the inhale wasn't. It wouldn't take me long to get uncomfortable and most likely open my mouth if I lost power.
Now without my hand over the hole for the hose...easy peasy. Just like regular non mask wearing breathing.

During a power outage when using a ff mask, the thing that woke me was the clicking of the anti-asphyxiation valve.
"What is that noise?"

LOL, I never thought about that! That explains a lot. Oh, and so funny, when I was looking at the SH data this morning, I had completely forgotten about the hose issue, I guess because I was so sleepy when it happened. I saw that 1-1/2-hour chunk of nothing on the data and was trying desperately to figure out how it could have happened because I knew I hadn't turned the machine off and then back on. My first thoughts were, "Okay, what broke, what's not working right." After about ten minutes, I remembered what happened.

Wow - same thing happened to me on Sunday night! Very unusual for me. When my hose disconnects like that, the Trilogy goes nuts and it makes a ton of noise and wakes me up. The Trilogy does not like things like that and it probably would eventually start alarming.

I've done this a few times, but the sound of the air rushing out of my hose wakes either me, or my wife up.
