VPAP III settings

Post by EatBBQ » Mon Dec 04, 2006 2:52 pm

I have a Resmed VPAP III, the non ST version. I think it's the non ST (it doesn't say ST on it) It does have a SPONT reading if that tells you anything.

Been using it for about a year but there is something that has always annoyed me. The setting for the time between inhalation and expiration is too short. I feel like it is cutting me off from breathing as deeply as I would like.

Does anyone know how to NOT change the settings for this? I want to avoid changing the settings accidentally

My AHI hovers around 3.5 so that is good. It just annoys me when I try to fall asleep and when I inhale it cuts me short.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you have the non-ST, if your VPAP III machine doesn't have ST or ST-A on it and says only "Spontaneous".

When I used a VPAP III for several weeks at EPAP 9, IPAP 12, I felt the same premature inhalation cutoff that you describe. It worked better after I changed these particular settings to these numbers:

Rise Time - 900 mS

IPAP Max - 4.00 s

IPAP Min - 0.10 s
ResMed S9 VPAP Auto (ASV)
Humidifier: Integrated + Climate Control hose
Mask: Aeiomed Headrest (deconstructed, with homemade straps
3M painters tape over mouth

Thanks, I will absolutely NOT try that!!!

If I "accidentally" do that, it will not affect my inhale and exhale pressure settings correct?

Thank You

Those three settings I mentioned don't affect your inhale (IPAP) or exhale (EPAP) pressure settings.

I'd do this, if I were you... the first time you go through the settings menus, don't change anything. Just walk completely through the menus, writing down every number, every word, every symbol you see in the little display window.

Next time through, if you want to make some changes and they don't seems to help, you have your notes so you can change it back to the original settings.

Hint..it's ok to press the button under the word "change" and then use the double arrow up/down button to toggle through, seeing what the changes could be for a particular setting. Nothing will actually get changed just by toggling through with the up/down arrow, looking at what the various settings could be set to. As long as you don't press the button under the word "apply" no change will be made to the setting.

Whenever you are finished looking at a setting, and you don't want to change it (with the word "apply") and you want to get away from that menu item without actually making a change, just hit the button under the word Exit. Hitting Exit will keep taking you backward through the menu levels until you finally get out of the entire clinician menu.

So, if you're looking at a setting but you don't want to change it, yet you're seeing the word "apply" on the screen, just hit the button under the word Exit. That takes you back a step to where you'll see the word "change". Hit Exit again, and you'll back out a bit more, to where you'll see the word "Next". Use "Next" to simply go to the next menu item.

Main thing to remember:

Hitting the button under the word "Change" is ok to do. The screen will then show the word "apply", but it's safe to toggle (with the up/down doublearrow button) through the possible changes that can be made. Nothing will actually get "changed" unless you hit the button under "apply". You don't even have to remember what the setting was for that item, or put it back on the setting. It will go back to the original setting after you hit Exit....as long as you don't hit "Apply" while looking at it.

Don't hit the button under the word "Apply" unless you really want the setting you're looking at in the window be the setting to use.

Use the Exit button to back out of any screen or menu item you don't want to be at. Hitting Exit about 4 times will definitely take you all the way back out of the clinician menu.

Or, just sit there frozen...don't touch any buttons...and after a certain amount of time (30 seconds or 60 seconds of not pressing a button) the clinical menu will exit automatically.

Thank you very much, you just saved me a trip to a conference with the devil (DME) who probably doesn't know how to adjust the machine anyway.
