Is This Bad?

Post by Lee Lee » Fri Dec 01, 2006 1:36 pm

I just can't get my AHI and HI down under 5! Most nights it's 5.5, but some nights it's 7 or 8.
The strange thing (to me, at least) is that the AI is either 0 or 1.
So ,does that mean my therapy is working?
I thought I remembered seeing somewhere that the HI was where the APAP "rescued" me.
I know I'm mouth breathing, even with the tape. I also know I have "blowfish syndrome", and maybe that's what's happening. I really don't feel all that great, but I'm not really terribly sleepy. I have some other health issues (Gerd, Lupus) that may be responsible for feeling yucky.
Bottom line question, if the AI is 0, that means it's working, right???

If you're not feeling too great, and your HI is above 5, then you maybe one of those people whose sleep gets interrupted by hypopneas more than by apneas.

What machine are you using? At what pressure(s)?

I had rather more hypopneas than apneas in my PSG, and after a few months at a wider apap range, I lowered my HI (hypopnea index, i.e. the average number of hypopneas per hour) by raising the lower pressure (and narrowing the range thereby).

It may not be working its best. If you are recording a large number of hypopneas (like ozi suggested), you may be able to increase your minimum pressure a bit and prevent the hypopneas (again: as ozi suggested).

hypopnea = shallow breathing

My machine is a Res Med Autoset Vantage. My pressure, which used to be 10 is now around 12 most nights.
It's now set to 9cm-14cm.
I use a nasal mask (FP HC407) that leaks some (leaks usually around 10)
I wonder if this is a narrow enough range, and if the bottom pressure is high enough?
