unplug to remove card?
unplug to remove card?
My son and I have the same machine, the Respironics M Series Auto. He was told by the RT at the DME to unplug his machine before removing the Smart Card. I was not told to do that. We have the same DME but not the same RT.
Is it necessary to unplug the machine first?
The machine makes a beep when the card is removed and then beeps again when the card is replaced. This is without unplugging the machine. I think he said that the machine beeps if the card is missing when he plugs in the machine.
The manual does not discuss this issue in the section about the Smart Card.

I never unplug my machine when I take the card out or put it back in. Can't imagine why your son's RT told him that...probably an RT that's not completely familiar with how these cards/machines work together.

Smart card removal/insertion
Since Mom started this thread several days ago, I figured I'd toss in my thoughts:
Yes, the guy at the DME told me to unplug my machine when I'm taking out my card.
No, it probably is not necessary to do so.
In light of the fact (confirmed by a posting I read somewhere, but cannot find at the moment) that if your card is not in your machine, your data don't get recorded, I've decided that I'll continue to unplug my machine before removing my card. Having to plug in my machine will alert me that the card may not be in place, and I want the data recorded.
Not a big deal to many, but it works for me.

The machine is supposed to beep once when you insert or remove the card.
The beep IS THE ALERT that will tell you the card is inserted.....and the word "CARD" will appear in the lower right-hand corner of the LCD screen.
I would be suspicious of a DME employee that told me to shut it off to insert or remove the card.
There are also NO guarantees that either method (turning off or leaving on) will work 100%.
Just last night, about 12 minutes after my machine started, it started beeping. It wouldn't shut off....and the lights were flashing.....so, knowing what was wrong, I pulled the card from the machine and re-inserted it and everything was fine after that and the recording started from that point. This is at least the second time this has happened to me since I began therapy in May of '05 (and both times it waited till I was drifting off).

Just to clarify Den's comment with respect to the M Series (or, at least, the M Series Auto) - after the beep, you should see a card icon in the upper right hand corner of the LCD screen. The word "CARD" may apply to the older Remstar series.Wulfman wrote:The machine is supposed to beep once when you insert or remove the card.

Thanks for the info, greyhound. I didn't realize they moved it on the new M machines....greyhound wrote:Just to clarify Den's comment with respect to the M Series (or, at least, the M Series Auto) - after the beep, you should see a card icon in the upper right hand corner of the LCD screen.
