Re: What's Going On With The Forum
We have considered IP banning, but there are a few legitimate users in the range of IPs in use, so we can't go that route without further investigation. We have some other ideas cooking as well.
Re: What's Going On With The Forum
Looks like he's testing the waters again with guest posting of the spam again.

That makes me wonder if a legitimate user is part of this problem?forumadmin wrote:We have considered IP banning, but there are a few legitimate users in the range of IPs in use, so we can't go that route without further investigation. We have some other ideas cooking as well.

I assume that you're suggesting that a legitimate user was hacked.
Re: What's Going On With The Forum
Guest spam is still getting through. He's testing things again.

Re: What's Going On With The Forum
Very simple, turn off new accounts and guest accounts posting for now: take out the trash, delete all spam posts and their accounts. Then the forum will be usable,
Almost everything that needs to be passed on XPAP related is in the DB. Old members could still post and help, then you can work on a SAFE way to allow new members to post??? Guests need to be READ ONLY period... This is the price paid for by past practices.

Jim in case you and Pugsy aren't paying attention this problem was caused by "Registered" Members not one Guest post my friend. There's a message there.Goofproof wrote: Guests need to be READ ONLY period... This is the price paid for by past practices.
Re: What's Going On With The Forum
Which is why registration needs to turned off. I would have thought that this would be the first step to take and then look at setting new security measures.Guest wrote:Jim in case you and Pugsy aren't paying attention this problem was caused by "Registered" Members not one Guest post my friend. Please don't presume to know what I am paying attention to or not. You don't have a frigging clue.Guest wrote:Jim in case you and Pugsy aren't paying attention this problem was caused by "Registered" Members not one Guest post my friend.
I am fully aware that the bulk of this latest attack was by registered members BUT the spammer was also posting the same crap as an unregistered guest. I personally removed probably over guest spam 100 in the last 24 hours with maybe 30 tonight.
The reason you don't see it was because it got removed...some by me and some by others.
I mentioned it because I was asked to point out any blips/problems that popped up after they thought they had things fixed.
I was merely doing as asked...telling them that the Chinese/Korean/whatever spam was still being actively being posted by unregistered guests so obviously whatever was implemented in an attempt to block the guest spam...it wasn't working so great.
Despite what your paranoid little mind might think...I wasn't referring to you at all.
And much to my wishing it wasn't so....I don't think Johnny is wanting to make posting a logged in registered members only requirement. Last I heard he still wants to allow guest posting but wants to beef up security to prevent the real spam. At least that was my understanding of what they were trying to do.
I have nothing against guest postings in general (spam of course the exception no matter who does it) despite what you might say about me.
I have a feeling that I would find you just as unpleasant registered or not.

Re: What's Going On With The Forum
I posted the spam posts WERE from Registered SPAMMERS I deleted over 100 of them. Proof Guests shouldn't be allowed to post, they can't read and follow the words. Registering here is too easy, we must correct it or face what we got this weekend. Re: What's Going On With The Forum
It's 11:30 pm and I just removed a couple of spams posted by a 'Guest'. They were posted in the last couple of minutes. Good luck & thank you to the Goodmans, and the users who have working on deleting this stuff as fast as they can!

I agree, I was so disappointed and worried when I saw the spam. Your advises always have been so valuable and I personally need your support.
I hope that you will be able to fix the issue. Will keep checking in the meantime.

Re: What's Going On With The Forum
I'm not sure what was done, but it appears to be under control.
What was done to this forum is a fairly classic case of a "Denial of Service" attack.
