Most Comfortable and quiet mask

Post by Ichabod » Fri Nov 17, 2006 10:18 pm

I am new to this and wish I had done a little research before getting my equipment. My mask is too noisy. I do not remember much noise at my sleep study. Understanding that everyone is different, what are some opinions on the quietest and most comfortable interface?

According to some the Soyala nasal mask is absolutely silent. Do a search on soyala mask and see.

I don't hear anything with my ComfortLite2, but I do run a fan for white noise.

I've had the SomnoTech Soyala for about a week now, it has quickly become my favorite mask.

It is the most comfortable offering fewer leaks, simple adjustments, quality made and it is absolutely silent.

I would buy it again, best nasal mask I've used to date and I've tried more than a dozen.

I find the Respironics Comfort Select to be about the quietest, most comfortable and leak-free mask I've come across.

The comort gel is a similiar product that can be even better leak-wise for some difficult to fit people, though I find it just a little less comfortable.

This depends on you and what you can tolerate. All of the masks, I have tried this year (2006, listed below) are quiet, until something gets in front of the passive exhalation ports, then they are loud. Also, most are very loud if they leak. The ones I'm familiar with, in chronological order, are:

1) Adams Circuit - not real quiet, but usable. I didn't like the solid, one piece nasal pillow holder. However, I used this puppy, with mouth taped, for two months.

2) ComfortLite 2 - This mask is pretty quiet, unless one of the nasal pillows "pops" out, then its very loud. But I like that feature.

3) ResMed Ultra Mirage Full-face mask - Ugh! I gave this guy a two-week trial, but I just could not stand the pressure on my lower jaw and the pain on the bridge of my nose. I ripped it off every night I tried to use it.

4) F&P HC431 Full-face mask - Ah!, no more jaw pain, but a little more nose (bridge) pain. I gave this a two-week trial also, and I tolerated it better than the UMFF. However, was too hot for me and the leaks were a problem.

5) Hybrid - I've said this several times, if the curve of one of the Hybrid's three mouth-pieces fits the curve of your face, and you are accustomed to nasal pillows, you need to try this mask. I just feel better when I can use it.
If you are looking for quiet, you may want to avoid the Hybrid. With it's "huge" CO2 "washout (passive exhalation port flow), if anything pops up in front of these ports, watch out! It sounds like an AK47.

6) Next one to try will probably be the HC432. Maybe, in January, I can tolerate the heat.

Tonight it will be the faithful CL2 with garbage bag tyes, chapstick, Bag Balm,
and Micropore tape.

December 1st , I'll be using the Hybrid again. For me, some features are more important than quiet.

I'm on my fourth mask (over a period of six months or so) and, as of today, my vote goes to the Respironics Comfort Classic nasal mask. It's very quiet, very comfortable, and gives me excellent numbers. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the best solution (for me) was also among the simplest and least expensive.

The Respironics Comfort Curve is also very quiet, though many people have problems getting a good seal with it.

Comfortable Quiet Mask

Post by billybob02 » Sat Nov 18, 2006 11:14 am

Hi All,
I can not tell you how cool it is to actually talk with other cpap users and get real life insights to equipment and treatment concepts.
I have been on cpap for over 4 years - and have had my ups and downs with trying to get a decent nights sleep. I have tried several differnent mask, some worked ok, some not. I find the nasal pillows to work best - however now the noise issue discharge has started to really bug me.

I recently purchased the Adams - it works ok - there has got to be a better design - that is why I joined.
Anyone using the dental mouth appliances that stop mouth venting?
I find the chin straps just do not work anymore. Suggestions?

Snoredog,
Can you make a comparison of the Soyala and the activa? Thanks.

I was looking at some reviews for the soyala and some of them have reported problems with the hose actually falling off the mask. On one site the reviewer reported the hose came off 4-5 times a night. Ugh.
I hope they get that fixed because it sounds like a good mask.

2 cents

Post by whatrdreamsmadeof » Sat Nov 18, 2006 6:46 pm

Just my 2 cents here, I have tried 13 masks over the past 8 months and for me the Breeze nasal interface works best.......I am very restless and I am a stomach sleeper. I find it quiet and very comfortable as the new adjustments to the head gear makes it non slip..
Good luck in your choice......
