Any suggestions?

Post by ready2sleep » Mon Nov 06, 2006 8:35 am

I have been on cpap since first week of October. In the beginning, I was doing great! Kept the mask on, actually had no problems with it on and finished the night with it on. Latetly if I put it on, by the end of the night I pull it back off. I put it on, I get all nervous in my stomach, and am afraid at some point I wont be able to breathe (all in my head I know). It just seems like I was having an easier time in the beginning and now having a real hard time getting used to it? I know you guys are a wealth of information, any to pass along to me? Thanks in advance to the help.

Aerophagia

Post by GoofyUT » Mon Nov 06, 2006 8:47 am

You mention that you get all "nervous in your stomach." Could it be that over the month, you've begun to experience aerophagia, the process of swallowing the pressurized air you're getting from your xPAP, which actually causes stomach distension and discomfort? It is a VERY common adversity that we face in this wild, and wacky business.

Just a thought.

Good luck!!!

When I first started APAP, my low pressure of 7 seemed like alot of air and I found breathing against it rather hard. Then within a short time, I became accustomed to that pressure to the point that I occasionally had to lift the mask off my nose to make sure air was actually coming out. I raised my low pressure up to 8 a few weeks ago and like it better.

Also I've read several times on this forum that people using really low pressures, like 4 or 5 often feel like they are not getting enough air. Could this be a factor in your discomfort?

Hello ready2 sleep.

Whether or not is all in your head, is not an issue. This is real to you and causing you distress and keeping you from your proper treatment.

Has your pressure changed?

Are you using the CFlex to help with exhaling?

It sounds more like a panic attack type thing.

Are you claustrophobic?

Are you able to try some nasal type interfaces so they do not cover your face. Would that make you feel better.

When you put it on and get nervous, what is going through your mind at that point. Try to figure out what is going on in your mind, you may be able to help yourself like that.

I had a complete panic attack when I put on the Activia mask, after that I could not put any other nasal things that cover my face. even the comfort lite 2 that has a thing over the eyes after that forget it. When I did my titration I had no problem with a simple nasal mask, but not now.

I can do this, I will do this.

My disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, nor have I ever worked in the health care field Just my personal opinions.
