Can AHI of 125 be real?

Post by rosenc1c » Tue Oct 31, 2006 9:09 am

I just had a sleep study performed, and they determined I had an AHI of 125 per hour. As I learn more about what this means, I am beginning to question whether it is realistic? I've been snoring for some time, and for the past few months have grown increasingly sleepy in the afternoons.

I know I have not felt 100%, but I am also not a walking zombie. Based upon everything I am reading, I feel like if 125 is a real value that I would feel much worse than I do. I am wondering if members of this group have had experiences with erroneous or inflated AHI values?

My initial diagnosis was an AHI of 105. Yep, I can believe the 125 AHI is real.

There are 60 minutes in an hour-60 seconds in a minute-so that is 3600 seconds. Plenty of time for 125 apneas and breathing too. Look at how long the apneas last and your oxygen level. Find out if they are all obstructive or if you have centrally induced apneas as well.
One of the reasons you don't feel too bad is that the body is a wonderfully adaptive thing. In a sense you don't know how bad you feel. It happened gradually and you didn't notice the decline. I didn't feel "too bad" but what a difference treatment made-and now that I'm getting >7 hr/night GOOD sleep-I know how bad I feel the next day if something interferes with my sleep.

Mine was AHI 150, based on 3 hours of poor sleep. 450 score for 3 hours. Do I think Sleep Studys mean much, I don't think mine did, many things were done poorly.

I think that the studies aren't independent, of the medical professions, and sometime things are fudged in favor of treatment.

I do however have Apnea, and XPAP treatment works good for me, just as good as if I had taken over my own care in the first place. Opps! I did! Jim

That's why it works.

When I see these numbers-it confirms my questions about what am I really doing on cpap. I am still trying to understand how to read and interpret my initial sleep study. What I can tell you is that from my study, my AHI is listed as 4.8. Doesn't that seem like such a low # compared to most of you...lol. 1 central and 32 partial obstructive apneas. I was aroused 39 times due to respiratory events. But then elsewhere in the report it states that I had a total of 15 awakenings. I'll figure it out one day.

Given that you had a sleep study done I assume that you where having some symptoms from the apneas that made you seek treatment?

My 1st sleep study had my AHI at 62.

125 is believeable.

On Cpap, can get it as low as under 1 but typically it will now vary up to 5 or on a bad night higher.

Good luck

I had 168 hypopneas in 128 minutes of sleep, obviously not a very good sleep night.

I had sleep study AHI index of 108. Did not think that many was possible but I have found out that number is common for untreated apnea. With APAP, my AHI index is now 2.2-3.3.

I had an AHI of 149 which was higher than any I'd read about here. It's scared me into trying the CPAP for the last month. I'm not in love with it yet, but it is getting easier.
