Change of insurance

Post by buckeyered » Sun Oct 29, 2006 5:39 pm

My wife's employer is changing from United Healthcare to Blue Cross Blue Shield, I can't find out any info on CPAP coverage until Jan 1st.
Does anyone know if they are CPAP friendly or am I on my own?

We have blue cross hmo, and I haven't had to pay a penny for sleep study, machine, mask, etc. I think it does depend on what level of coverage the employer chooses, though. MIT is known to provide pretty good plans--not ideal, but better than average. For example, I get chiropractic coverage w/ BCBS, and didn't with our past carrier.

Do some inquiries and do the math. If you're in a rent-to-own plan, you may want to get your machine paid off before the end of the year under the old plan.....if new deductibles begin at the first of the year.

BCBS bought my machine outright. I have a $1500/yr allowance for durable medical equipment.

BCBS is very cpap friendly in my limited experience. They rented for 3 months then purchased the machine. Total cost for everything was just over $800.00 of which I had to pay 10% and they paid the other 90.

Sarah,

We've had another distinguished vistor from MIT grace our forum. He was kind enough to take the time to write a little piece of software the is near and dear to many of our hearts called "MyEncore" You may know him... Derek Rowell?

Wader,

You might want to edit your post and delete that link. I got "in trouble" for doing that once upon a time.

I don't know Professor Rowell at all, but have just written him an email asking if he would be interested in updating the MyEncore software. I told him about the problems people were having using it with the new M-series Respironics machines. I mentioned that my husband is at MIT with him, and that I went to Wellesley, as did his wife (shameless attempt to interest him in my plight ....) We'll see!

Done! Thanks for checking me on that one. I didn't realise it was an issue with him. It is easily available though by a search on the MIT website.

I think he posted that he had been absent from the forum as he had experienced some serious health issues a little while back. I hope all is well with him. He has been very nice to us (including myself) here on this forum.
