Very Scary
Melissa
Hi and thanks for your post. Keep us posted as to what the doctor says.
I used to cough a lot, many years ago. Now I just wake up or gasp. I do not know much about this acid reflux and am learning a lot from the boards.
At least you are posing all your concerns. You never now when a light bulb will go off for someone, while reading one of your posts.

GERD & Melissa's contributions
Hi Melissa,
I have appreciated the vigor of your inquiries and what has seemed to me to be a desire on your part to learn as much, as quickly, as possible. You have been willing to put yourself out there and ask questions that some might have been afraid to ask. Thank you for your contributions to the forum.
I suffered from undiagnosed GERD for about 38 years. It started when I was 12. I sought help from numerous doctors about the chronic dry cough which was so incessant that it was a constant embarrassment in social situations as well as being a real physical aggravation. In most case, doctors wrongly concluded that the GERD was caused by lung/respiratory problems (e.g., chronic bronchitis). I finally had an internist who immediately recognized the syndrome and prescribed the correct medications that started immediately to correct the problem. About the same time, 10 years ago, the same internist ordered a sleep study that led to the diagnosis of severe obstructive sleep apnea. Although I do not pretend to understand the connection, the CPAP treatment, also, seemed to help the GERD problem.
One thing I would like to say to those that might have GERD is do not rule it out if it does not respond to Prilosec or some other over-the-counter medication like Zantac. I have tried most of the medications used to treat GERD (I think), and every time I go off Protonix and try to use Prilosec, etc., the symptoms begin to return in about three weeks time.
When I read your initial post on this thread, my immediate response was, "I bet Melissa has GERD!" It was interesting to me to follow the dialogue and read all the posts. If nothing else, your putting your symptoms out there has helped to highlight a problem that is likely to benefit many people.
Hang in there, my friend.
