Just got mine ... I have the new headgear, and it's a swine. Totally does not work with my hair, which is chin-length and layered.

And how do you get the blasted headgear to stay on the blasted mask? Every time I move, at least one clip comes off. Isn't there any way to make them more secure?

Also, the small mouth cushion was deformed right out of the box and doesn't fit into the plastic shell. I seem to be between small and medium so obviously we're trying medium first.

For the deformed cushion, just soak it in very warm water for a few minutes. It will soften up and you can reshape it a little.

Make sure you hear a "clicking" sound when you attach each clip to the mask. If you hear that sound, it means the clip is securely attached to the mask and won't come off unless you try to disconnect.

It's not so much that it needs re-shaping as that one corner is totally stretched out and therefore won't fit into the mask shell and so the air leaks out between the shell and the edge of the cushion.

Here's what I mean:
Image

I'm sure it's actually deformed (as in, I'm sure I'm not just being inept), because no matter how many times I take it out and put it back in, it doesn't fit. And it always doesn't fit at the exact same place. And the other two cushions go in and out with no problem.

I'm a little afraid that if I try the water thing, the (online) DME won't replace it. They already sent me the code to send it back with; I'm just bummed because I was really looking forward to this and I do think small is probably the size I really need.

This may sound obvious and silly, but it happened to me.

A couple of times I just could not get the cushion in on the sides without a small crack that leaked. Later I discovered (much to my embarrassment) that because the elbow swivels around 360 degrees, I didn't realize that I had been trying to put the cushion in the mask upside down.

Now I check to see that I am putting it up right side up and haven't had any trouble with it fitting since then.

*g* Well, that totally sounds like something I would do, but I just went and checked, and it's definitely in the right way (I think in the picture you can even see the little things that oxygen would go into, so you can tell it's right side up).

I had just been trying it on with the machine, to see if maybe the deformity wouldn't prevent it sealing; but unfortunately, while the edge of the cushion does *just* fit inside the edge of the shell, with air blowing through it, it creates a narrow gap about 1/4" long that air blows straight back out of.

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

STUPID HUMAN TRICKS:

Okay, crisis averted, I found the clips to the Hybrid. I'm claiming sleep deprivation. That's my story. I'm sticking to it.

The 2nd place winner in the Good News Category, however, is that before I though to LOOK IN THE BOX (sigh...) for the clips, I figured out how to Lab-rat some clips until I could buy more clips:

Find some thin nylon cord. I happen to have 100 feet of this flat nylon cording that's sold at outdoor supply stores for making emergency repairs to camping gear, tents, etc. It's part of the required supplies for my Search & Rescue kit. It's very handy stuff, btw... and cheap...

NOTE: BTW, this stuff is basically nylon shoe string. Think just that small and flat. Round cord would be too thick to secure well around the little plastic posts.

Anyway, I thought I'd tie this flat cord around each little plastic post, leaving a long tail. That tail I'd tie into a little loop, just big enough to run the strap through.

I thought about doing this with some beading wire, but then decided that wire on that plastic might not be a good idea. Stray ends might pierce the seal silicone.

Anyway, I post this because someone recently had a crisis were she lost her Hybrid clip in a motel room. So, I thought maybe the knowledge might come in handy to someone.

Now, off to test-drive the Hybrid. A little before dinner nap never hurt anyone...

In case anyone's wondering

Apparently the mouth cushion just needed time to acclimate to ... who knows? ... the altitude? ... anyway, it was better the next day and back to normal today (two days later).

Absolutely loving it so far. I don't think I've slept that well the whole time I've been on CPAP (which, admittedly, is only about 6 weeks).

Someone asked about the Hybrid with higher pressures. My machine is at 19 and the Hybrid acts like a hovercraft on my face. Also couldn't get the nasal cushions to work.

I performed a chin-ectomy and all the sizes of pillows but can't get the damned thing to settle in. I tried the pillows in their uppermost configuration but can't seem to get a good fit - guess I have a freak upper lip.

I am considering shaving my goatee but others say they have no problem with facial hair, so it may not be it.

Reverted to my nasal mask until I can figure this out.

Rob

P.S. I thought my machine was not pushing at 19 with the nasal mask. With this thing it confirmed there is nothing wrong with my machine. It is pushing a lot of air, just I guess I notice it less with the nasal mask.

Do you have the new Hybrid shell (with the lower exhaust flow)? If your manual says 05080 Rev C, then you have the new shell. If not, you have the old shell. My pressure is high and I have to admit that the new shell made a world of difference. It was quieter and there is not too much air coming out of the exhaust holes. Make sure you have the new grey and black headgear also. The new headgear gave me far lesser leaks at the high pressure. You might want to send an email to support@hybridmask.com if you don’t have the new shell and headgear, they may even send it to you free of charge.

The Hybrid has a pretty high leak rate. As I recall it is up around 40???
I just want to go back to sleep!
