Life of hose

Post by needingu » Sat Oct 14, 2006 3:59 pm

I hate to be so ignorant but what happens when the hose is ready to be replaced? Leak, don't fit at connector etc. I would think it would last a long time.

Darned if I know......
I've been using mine for a year and a half and works/fits just fine yet. AND, I've never cleaned it......but I don't use heated humidity either.

I would suppose the thing you listed and whatever else could damage it.

Best wishes,

I have had mine for 10 months now and have no plans to replace it unless it developes a leak.

Every now and then I turn the machine on without the mask and plug the end of the hose with my thumb and inspect for leaks.

I do keep a replacement handy so if I get a leak I wont have to wait to order one.

HOSE

Post by Ms Piggy » Sat Oct 14, 2006 4:54 pm

Hi,
my hose is 11 months old and, maybe due to the angle I have had the machine at, it is showing signs of wear, it has stretch marks near the fitting. or maybe that could be due to the way I detach it from the mask. I was wondering if I should dab a bit of shoegoo on it to see what happens.
or tape it, or, if I could get some big enough, some shrink wrap- a bit dangerous maybe as you have to heat it. There are some things that Ioccasionally go to great lengths to make them last, this could be one of them!
I have another hose standing by

I would think some electrical tape on the worn spots would work fine.
I would stay away from any solvent based glue.

I'm on medicare and my DME mails me a new hose monthly. She said that as medicare will pay for it they advise changing frequently to avoid bacterial problems as well as wear.

Gee I wonder why medicare has financial issues and we have landfill issues if they are sending out new plastic tubing monthly.

5 years and counting here, same hose, I keep using the same one even when I've gotten 8 different machines and new hoses during that time.

I like the old hose because it is easier to remove from the mask and machine and it is more flexible than a new one. I think it is a Respironics hose as that was my first machine.

gerry, why don't you tell your DME to stop mailing you hoses until you need a new one? The bacterial issue sounds like poppycock to me. An Ivory Liquid wash and a white vinegar soak can solve that problem easily. And a lot cheaper.

I have been on CPAP since 05 July and my hose is just fine. The other day the DME asked if I wanted a new hose, telling me that I am now eligible for Tricare to pay for a new one. My cost share would have been 20%, but I told them to hold off.

In this forum and elsewhere, I keep running across depressing examples of why health care costs so much and why future Medicare costs are a HUGE ticking bomb that make Social Security unfundedness look like a mouse fart in comparison.

I used to have breakfast with a diabetic WW II vet. He saw an ad on late nite TV for free shoes for diabetics, so he called the 800 number. A dude came to his house and measured him up. He emphasized that all this was at no cost to the vet. Pretty soon a pair of tennis shoes and several pair of socks arrived in the mail. When the medicare EOB arrived, it showed that MC paid the supplier $ 500 for the stuff. The vet put the stuff in the closet for a year or so and then started wearing the tennis shoes. No wonder that MC is going broke. Free shoes, new CPAP hoses every month, $ 1,300 total rental charges on a $ 550 (outright purchase cost) heated, humidified CPAP, etc, etc.

You hit it exactly...I was told I could get another hose...I try to save Medicare when I can and I thought monthly was a bit much..so I wondered why it would even be considered as my hose is 9 months used and i see no need for another and will tell the provider the same. Just wondered if I had missed something. I also have one tucked away for emergency. Thanks for the response.

Isn't it amazing how much attention the DMEs pay to CERTAIN aspects of our care?
Jeepdoctor: I completely agree with your ethical stand!
Have you noticed that retired military are any more likely to 'protect' their assets by being more discerning? That is, Tricare vs Medicare?

Offtopic note, but somewhat related: How does one 'deal' with a neighbor who does NOT recycle? (too much trouble). Gee, I know what glass, certain plastics and metals look like!! I guess it is especially irritating because neighbor downs LOTS of those water bottles, and claims to be 'religious' (don't u waste). Or should I just 'get over it'??

It is really sad about how some will not recycle when now the bin is put out at the street next to the garbage can for a good number of us. Not really any extra work.

Some of the worst offenders are the public schools. Styrophome trays for 1000 kids EVERY DAY as well as plastic utensils that go straight in the trash. And these trays are some of the worst things in terms of environmental pollution.

Our community has a law about home recycling so I suppose you could call the town or village enforcement unit, but one would hate to do that to a neighbor.

And how long do you think it would work, or the town would care to keep coming out and checking? Heck, the third time we lost our mailbox in 3 weeks the police never even showed up to look nor would they assign extra patrols to our neighborhood. They said we live in the low crime section. Yes, but we pay taxes too.
Got a PO box for a while since we have had enough.

So I guess while I really hate to say it my suggestion falls in the "get over it category" primarily because you will just drive yourself crazy worrying about it.

RIGHT!
Plus, it saves space in my regular trash, for which I use plastic bags.

Some of that is the fault of the Waste Management Company, or the way the contract with them is written! WE CANNOT put out ANY styrofoam!!! And plastics must have certain numbers on them.
I think styrofoam is a big land-robber - but maybe it compresses well, eh?

When I lived in San Diego, one of the fanciest parts (Hotels) was built on LAND FILL! But then, the Pacific Ocean is CA's largest LAND fill (bad pun).

As far as the neighbor goes, I think time will afford me the opportunity for the 'home run' of a remark. The part that disturbs me is her remarks about "doing her 'devotions'" (??), giving thanks, yadayada - and then breaking two of the Big Guy's Rules!!! I shall now officially "Let IT Go"....off to that great landfill over yonder, where people can't spend a Sunday afternoon at the free swap meet anymore, because everything is so compacted! Yes, I actually knew some people who perused the old town dump! Sorry about that pictue...yechhhhhh

60 hoses?? Hmmmm....poke a few holes in them glue 'em together and you have a mini drainage hose for mini water problems.

Or forget the holes and sell it as an "extended hose" for a hosehead who walks in their sleep.

Any other suggestions???
