crws.exe appears related to the ResScan software. Do we need it for ResScan to work?

Dang I must be old. I remember when "A" drive was a 5 1/4" floppy that was floppy. Then the "HIGH' capacity 3 1/2" floppies appeared.
For Historians only:
From an "archaic observer": The 3 1/2" Floppy Drive has always been Drive 'A', the substitute in software for the Card Reader (if you don't remember those, just "Trust Me". The card reader was the ONLY source of input to the computer system during boot when first designed. Then came the PC and the floppy, its only input device to the boot software. (keyboard not recognized for hopefully obvious reasons). That part of the software remains.

I suspect crws.exe is the software hook that looks at the "removable disk" to find the new data on the SD card. As was mentioned earlier, ResScan just looks for "removable data storage" which - up until about 2001 - included Floppy Disks. So it will spin the floppy drive continuously, as it doesn't know that this drive doesn't ever contain SD cards. It's bad software coding, for certain, as you should always code in a timeout for situations like this and you DEFINITELY should NEVER code continual scanning of removable devices for many many reasons. However, the folks at ResMed did both things incorrectly =(

Short answer, yes you need to have it running when the ResScan software is running, but not the rest of the time.

Maybe it's looking for a card reader that goes into a floppy drive (can't imagine why that never become popular ), but my first guess is that Autoscan is looking for a file. Some of the older versions of Windows used to flog the A drive for this reason. Putting a disk in won't stop it because the software doesn't remember that it looked for the missing file before, much less that it didn't find it on the floppy.

One thing you might try is to change the drive letter of the floppy from A to Z. If Autoscan is simply looking at every drive, this won't help. But it's possible that whoever thought it would be a good idea to scan the A drive if a file is missing, or on the off chance that one of the six existing floppy card readers is available, didn't anticipate that a computer might have more than a couple floppies and one or two hard drive. If that's the case, moving the floppy out of range might stop the flogging. A quick search turned up this page. The last post gives instructions. I haven't tried it myself.

Okay .... in the very, very dim recesses of my mind I vaguely remember installing some software (quite possibly AutoScan) that kept thump, thumping all the while I was using it. I, and a couple of others, complained about it in some forum and someone came up w/the solution and sent it to us. A simple solution that even "I" was able to do all my my lonesome. I have to go dig thru some old, old e-mails as I'm not sure where I stashed it but I know I saved the info somewhere. Don't anyone hold their breath!!!

Oh, my gawd!!!! I am so impressed w/myself!!! I actually filed that information logically!!! In my Resmed file - and it was AutoScan that was "clacking".

From Jim Kurtz on December 1st, 2006:
I've attached the file to fix autoscan clack.

What you have to do is place the file in your c:\, or "root directory". That should take care of the problem. It will clack once, and then stop.

Let me know how you make out

Regards, Jim
OOOOOOPS!!!

1] I don't know how to post an e-mail attachment here.
2] I only now just realized how old and moldy the start of this thread is!!! Some troll "got" me!
3] IF someone DOES need this "fix" PM me or someone tell me how to post an attachment.
4] I think I am red-faced embarrassed. I "should" have known, just seeing AutoScan instead of ResScan.
