first night oddities

OK, so I wound up with the Swift Mirage nasal pillows mask, and it's great--comfortable, no apparent leaks. I wore it all night without any discomfort. However, my husband woke me once for snoring and said I also emitted occasional single snores throughout the night. Once in the night I awoke feeling slightly lightheaded, but it was brief. I still feel tired this morning, but perhaps slightly more mentally alert.

My machine has got data, theoretically, but as far as I can tell, it only provides weekly and monthly averages, and even after 9.something hours blowing, those averages are still all at zero (?). I don't understand.

At my titration study, a pressure of 6 got my AHI down to 5, so that's where they started the machine. To get my AHI to zero required a pressure of 10. I am thinking I should raise my pressure to seven tonight and see if the snoring stops. I know how to do this.

Any thoughts?

Hello svh,

Congrats on your first night. It was also my first night.

I have no idea about all the zeros. I asked that in the Remstar M Auto topic.

I am sure others will tell you to adjust the settings. I was told if you are still snoring, to call Doctor, so that is what I am telling you.

I agree 100%. The next step is to raise the pressure 1 or 2 units.
Remember your machine has a pressure accuracy of + - one cm/H2O.
Therefore, 6 cm/H2O could easily be 5 cm/H2O.

The snoring usually indicates a need to raise the pressure a bit.

I suggest that

1)you make any changes in small increments, and

2) try to give it a week or so between each change so you can form a solid opinion of the effect of the change before making another.

A little bit of snoring is probably nothing to be concerned about.

A couple of other things: More is not necessarily better, and for good sleep you need not reduce your AHI to zero. You may find that a pressure of 10 cm is uncomfortable for sleeping and that 5 or 6 or 7 gives you the best result.

if you are a newbie cpaper with that mask, I would set your machine to:

Min.=5.0 cm
Max. =10 cm,

if you are going to use a ramp, I'd use a 30 minute timer with it. That machine will then increase up to 10cm if needed which may lower your score. Keep in mind you can always push the Ramp button and lower the pressure back to the Min.

If you use the machine for 1 night, the 7-day average will show the avg AHI for that night, 2nd night, avg of the 2 nights, 3rd night avg until it gets a 7-day average in which the first night's data drops off the 7-day but it still used in the 30-day average.

Snoredog--thanks, but I only have a CPAP, so I can't set a range. I'm going to try 7 tonight, a step up from 6 last night. We'll see how it goes! Thanks for all your help.
