Humidifier

Post by NyNurse33 » Thu Oct 05, 2006 8:23 pm

As you know, last night was my first night with the new love of my life (sorry, hubby ) but when I checked the water level today, it seemed to have used alot. I almost filled it to the max line last night and now its more than 3/4 gone. I had it set to 2 and had lots of rain out in the mask. My ex (Mr. Resmed Escape) hardly ever had to be tapped off with it set @ 3. Anyone else notice this? And can anyone give me an idea of what setting I should set it at tonight. It probably will get down to 64 in the house tonight and dry. I never was good @ this type of scientific stuff.

No replies and off to bed in a minute. Looks like I'll be a wet hosehead again tonight. LOL

I keep mine on 3 and have the aussie hose so no rainout. I also go through about 3/4 of the tank of water, So I guess that's the norm.

Thanks Brenda, I'll have to make do without the aussie hose for now.

I am in NY near you and haven't been turning it on at all. Just some water in the very bottom and let it run passover. Maybe I am hardy.

Hopefully the machine is down below bed level so less will get in your mask.

Hi Melissa--I think it goes through more water because set at 3 it gets warmer than the resmed set at 3--maybe because it is a more efficient heater--also the warming plate is larger than on the resmed, so, there is a bigger surface area warming the water, thus it takes less heat to warm the water than with the resmed...if you want less humidity--and thus less rainout--then you want to turn the number down. I run mine at 1 or 2 or some nights not at all and just have cool passover humidity--but I have never had rainout yet. I also have a fleece hosecover. It looks like maybe they started with 5 inches wide, and sewed a 1/2 inch seem, making it 4 inches around all together. also, I would add a little extra length--maybe 6" so that the tube isn't stretched to it's max, and then slipping off one end or the other.
Good luck, and hope you are getting good sleep--your numbers sound great by the way--and with your 90% pressure at 7--looks like you don't need that constant pressure of 10.

you live in NY, a very humid area compared to dry California, if you are getting rainout, turn down or turn off the humdifier. Water droplets in the hose indicates too high a setting. The colder your room gets the worse it will be, if you have your room below 65F, you may need the aussie heated hose (works great).

Using too much water: Too high humidifier setting, mouth breathing, or a large leak will cause you to use more water. Be sure to check that the tank is seating properly and is not leaking air at the coupler at the rear.

Melissa,

At a setting of two last night a bit more then half of the water was used. (a lot les then 2/3).

The setting left my nose a bit dry so I will up it to 3 tonight.

When I shook the hose, there was no water that came out.

My room was at 68F.

The way the humidifier works the warmer the water, the air above it will hold more moistue in it so the as the air blows over the warm water, it will take this moisture to your nose. As the air cools the water comes out of it just like dew on a cold can on a humid day. Like preemiern said using something to wrap the hose, will keep it warmer so the moiture will stay in the air.

I wonder/think the interfaces that go over your head may have more rain out because the last bit of hose is uncovered, and any mositure will go straight down to you, because the hose is higher then your nose. With a hose coming up to your nose, the moisture may stay down, becasue it would have to work its way up to your nose.

I can do this, I will do this.

My disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, nor have I ever worked in the health care field Just my personal opinions.

Hi Melissa
I know you dont want to hear this but using a lot of water is often a symptom of mouth breathing.

The Resmed heaters on the humidifiers don't heat up very much until a setting of 4. The resiponics heaters on humidifiers heat up from the very begining. My guess would be that you are using a much higher heat than before which would use more water.

When I have my humidifier set at 2 with the CL2 plus mouth tape I use 1/3 of a full supply.
When I try it without the mouth tape, it uses it all. I have concluded from
that, my mouth was open too much.

+ Aussie heated hose.

Get a cover for your hose to get these benefits:

1. Reduces or eliminates rainout.
2. The cover compared to the bare hose feels softer and more pleasant against your skin.
3. The cover dampens the sound of the hose banging around when you move in the bed.

The covers are cheap and convenient but the Aussie hoses are not. If rainout continues to be a problem, consider an Aussie hose.

You might even want to TRY leaving the humidifier turned off (passover mode) for a couple of nights just to see how that feels.
I can guarantee you won't have rainout and your nasal passages might like the cool air better.
