Mouth taping - does your dr/RT know? (same poll, new name)

Post by ozij » Wed Oct 04, 2006 3:15 pm

The sleep clinic I went to never did any followup with me, I've been on cpap for almost 18 months. They don't know I mouthbreathe (my titration night report, in which I hardly slept, says I kept my mouth shut...) And of course they don't know I choose to tape.

I was wondering how many of us have actually shared this info with their docs or RTs.

Please don't answer if you don't tape.
Thanks
O.

My sleep doctor hasn't done any followup with me at all. My primary care physician wrote my prescription for APAP, and other than the help I get here (which is tremendous!), I am on my own mostly for my treatment and it's effectiveness. I suppose I could mention it to my doctor at my next physical, but I don't know that it would matter one way or the other to him.

I have taped now for 3-4 months, haven't tried the polydent.

Thanks for the poll,
Tash

I changed the name, so everyone should be clearer what its about.
If you answer - write something so the poll won't sink beneath all the other messages.

Actually my primary care doc and my RT both know about it. Neither of them had heard of it but didn't seem too concerned. I haven't spoken with my sleep doc since my initial diagnosis.

I wish I could help you out with the numbers in your poll, but I don't fit into this category.....

On the other hand, I wish I could have taped my sleep doctor's mouth shut......it would have been a more pleasant experience with him.

Heck, Den - I didn't NEED TO!
He didn't have that much to say! (of importanct)

Asked me:
WHY I was on O2,
Why I bought my own AUTO (no help from him!)
WHAT my settings were.
NO COMMENT on my smart card readout except "Your compliance has improved"...I already KNEW that!
This guy is a pulmonary doctor.
I guess he won't TALK to me until I'm completely off cigarettes.
YES, I'm getting there, and have a 'quit date'.
YES, I regret that I started and kept it up.

There was NO DISCUSSION at that meeting; there WILL be at the next one; I'll take my "frustration pill" FIRST, and have my list of questions printed out, double-spaced, so he can read, respond in writing, and give me a copy.

(I'm on O2 because the RT from FIRST sleep study did a pulse oxy on me and discussed w/first sleep study doc (neurologist)).
(I went to THIS Dr. at primary physician's desire for me to be seen by him; I guess to 'see' him, one needs a sleep study done $$$).

Ozij,

My apologies.....I didn't mean to hijack your thread with rants about my sleep doctor.

That's OK Den, I enjoyed the rant, and it did bump the poll up some more....

AW, COME ON........ PUT IT BACK!
I MISSED "THE RANT"

This subject is a "free for all" anyway, just to keep the numbers up.
After all, I did some ranting myself...let me know if it 'should' be deleted.
...not that it will matter... this time.

Kathleen,

I didn't save my post anyway.....so I don't (conveniently) remember what I said before. Besides, the other folks are probably tired of reading my rants about that SOB. Even after a year and a half, he still gets to me.

While I am a mouth-breather, I am not a mouth-taper, so I haven't voted. My RT did tell me not to do it. That was one of those times when I wasn't thinking fast enough. I told him that I was a mouth-breather, though there is no mention of it on my study. His comment was that if I had problems, to let him know and he'd get me a chin strap, and whatever I do, don't tape my mouth shut. I don't remember if I had brought up taping first or if he did. Anyway, I called back within a couple of days, and asked for a chin strap. I was told that I would need an appointment just to get a chin strap. I thought that was BS, and I wished I would have forced the issue while I was there before, but I never dreamed that I'd need an appointment to pick up something so trivial. So I've done my own experimenting through guidance of cpaptalk.com. The DIY mouthguard seems to be my no-mouth-breathing method of choice so far. Neither Dr. nor RT know anything about that yet.

I wonder who voted . . .
I just started up again--too much dry mouth.
It worked pretty good; but I probably won't tell the nice saleslady at Apria
