Were you charged $ for a copy of your report?

Post by KimberlyinMN » Wed Oct 04, 2006 5:49 am

I called my doctor's office to get a copy of my sleep report sent to me. I was told that they charge 75 cents per page. Is that a common thing? Why should I have to pay $7.50 for a sleep study report when I paid for the sleep study itself??

Maybe that's normal and I'm just not aware of it.

My doctor's office happily runs a copy of anything I want. Never has been a charge.

Difference in doctors attitudes?

It's probably a copy charge... my doc didn't charge me anything for it.

Charging per page for this sort of thing is certainly not unheard of but falls into the category of "nickle and dime." Maybe next time your Doc sends you to the restroom with the "little jar" you can tell him/her that you charge $.75 per oz. LOL!

Yes, Doctors can charge for copies. Most do not. They can charge for copies sent to other doctors as well, but most don't. Some doctors charge for everything they can, but most don't. The idea being, they have to pay for the paper, toner, time for person making copies, pulling the file, refiling the file, etc. Most Doctors will make copies as a courtesy.

Get the report for free from the sleep lab. They must provide you a copy for free if you ask.

Paying for records

Post by kteague » Wed Oct 04, 2006 6:42 am

I recently had to get historical records from three different doctors' offices. The large HMO with records from doctors that had to be pulled from Medical Records charged me their ceiling price of $25 for about 300 pages. It cost .75 per page or $25 for the entire file. Generally if I'm in the office and ask for something they have access to, there is no charge. The charge comes when records are in Medical Records.

One other doc charged me $3.00 for a couple dozen pages.

The other had no charge for several pages.

But I would have been a bit irked to be charged for a test result I had never previously been given. I've never been charged in that circumstance.

I was not charged for the copy of my sleep study, but in the past when changinig doctors I was charged a per page fee for records that were transfered. Way back then it think it was 25 cents per page.

I'll ask at the sleep center tomorrow to see if they can give me a copy of the report. I was called yesterday to see how things were going and I mentioned that pressure I feel in my chest all day. Air pressure, not pain. Anyhow, I am going to be getting a Bi-PAP machine (trading in my CPAP).
