Coincidence?

Post by NyNurse33 » Mon Oct 02, 2006 5:56 pm

It seems that since I've started cpap, I've been sneezing more. Now that alone didn't bother me, but then I got a cold 2 weeks ago that lasted a few days and was a PITA. I got over the cold, but since the cold, I am still sneezing, and seems like I have to blow my nose more, either early in the morning or @ night. It almost feels like I've got this tickle in my nose, one nostril more than the other. I am using saline drops, and will try washes. Allergies, you ask? Only to dust mites and juniper. Now I know dust mites is a significant allergy, b/c you spend the most time of your life in your bedroom. But is my house anymore dustier now than it was 4 months ago, no. And I'm sneezing @ work too. Anyone know of cpap to cause these nasal symptoms? Should I increase or decrease my humidity? I'm not looking for a remedy as much as I'm looking for a cause, although any other answer than saline rinses, would be appreciated. Not that I'm against them, but I already know about them and the MD who I saw last week, who ordered my PSG is an ENT/allergist and she gave me a pamphlet on sinus rinse by neilmed. That was about the only thing she did for me....but that's a different post..lol.

addendum: Could it be because I'm using the pillows that past month and before I was using a nasal mask?

Does Upstate New York mean that you're anywhere near farm country? Here in central Illinois I'm always sneezing in the spring and fall, largely because the work being done in the fields around us kicks up a lot of dust that often gets carried for miles by the wind. This is harvest time and I've been sneezing all day.

Just a thought.

I think the pillows could b e producing more irritation. I guess my question is um... are the sneezes productive (so to speak) or simply going through the motions because of the tickle. If there is no output ...I'd say the culprit is the irritation rather than something introduced to cause an alergic reaction. Then again, you're much more a medico than I am, just my $0.02.

If I turn my HH too low I start sneezing. I keep it on 3 or 4 most of the time, this seems to keep the sinuses happy.

Melissa, I do not know if these will be helpful--but the links lead to discussions on saline nasal wash techniques. Since your doctor gave you some information on them, you may wish to try it and decide which method works for you.

It did for me, in the beginning (first month and half or so) and then one day I was suddenly aware that it no longer happens - I don't remember doing anything conciuosly about it.

That's a thought, I'll look into that. Yes my sneezes are productive. I live in the suburbs, but yes there are farms (somewhere) could be a possibility. Now this morning, so far I'm doing ok, no congestion, hmmm. Maybe its b/c I gave some extra drops of saline last night. These are all very good ideas, that I'll investigate when I get back from work today. I knew you guys wouldn't let me down.

Coincidence?

Hi, I've had the same thing for a while - first allergies when outdoors in the fall, and just recently the sneezing fits, but it's not the first time, and I know it is due to sinusitis brought on by the cooler, damper weather following the fall allergies. It won't last, but I do take a non-drowsy sinus tab which helps a lot and keeps down the tissue use!

the combination that I have found to help immensely is doing the sinus rinse--I use the Neilmed system nightly, then I wait for about an hour to let all the drainage settle down, and then I use flonase. After that combo for about a week--no more itches inside my nose. I think that between the two--it has greatly helped my fall allergies also. I hardly ever use my Afrin nasal spray anymore, and have not had any sinus congestion. Also am now able to use a nasal mask at night again when i want a break from my hybrid, and don't seem to be having mouthleaks anymore.
Good luck Melissa, and be sure to keep us updated on your progress getting an autopap machine

Just to leap slightly off-topic again, I tossed my Neilmed system after just a couple of applications when I developed my aforementioned ear infection. The Neilmed may have not been the cause, but since I've never experienced anything like that previously, I'm not taking any chances.

It's a little bit like Mark Twain's cat story. He said that he once had a cat that sat on a hot stove. He said that the cat never sat on a hot stove again. It never sat on a cold one either.

Just bought my canning salt and baking soda (already have distilled H2O) to make my own saline nasal rinse. I think I'm going to use an irrigating syringe I have instead of buying a bulb aspirator. So I just squirt up and let it drip back out? Is that the idea?

the irrigating syringe should work well, much easier to clean than the ear aspirator.

I seen my daughter use one of those large irrigating syringes the other day (she's a dentist), was going to ask her for one.

NyNurse... you put the mixture in the one side, and it will come out the other.
