I've used straight tap water for three years without incident. This is mostly in Fisher & Paykel machines with the disposable chambers, so they can be very succeptable to mineral deposit buildup, pitting and then holing. (Ah, but the humidification system is special, and well worth replacing chambers)
My solution (excuse the pun) is to use a straight vinegar soak in the chamber for an hour or two every week, give it a good swish, then rinse the heck out of it with clean water. Seems to work well as I get about 6 months out of each one, sometimes more.
In locations where there are more minerals than water in the water I use CLR as the soak, then thoroughly rinse out the chamber. This too does the job.
