Resmed S8 Autoset vs Elite

Post by newcpapuser » Mon Sep 25, 2006 12:51 am

I have just been diagnosed with OSA. (AHI 19, pressure 10 cm)
Have a choice of the above two machines

1. As per my understanding, Resmed Autoset automatically varies the pressure but doesnot have EPR in that mode. (has EPR only in CPAP mode and not auto mode)

Resmed Elite has EPR but not the auto features

Which one shall I go for?

2. Also should one get a builtin humidifier or aseparate one?

if Resmed is your only choice--then you should go for the autoset, because you can use it in either mode, and determine which works better for you. With a pressure setting of 10, you may feel perfectly comfortable without EPR, but IF you needed it, you would have it...
I have the Elite and am at a pressure of 14. I love the EPR feature, but wish I had the option of Auto so that I could find out if I can get by with lower pressures part of the night.
As far as the humidifier--it is a separate piece--there are none that are permanently attached. I use mine constantly at night and am very happy with it. I can run it at 4 or 5 and have no rainout(water in tubing and mask due to condensation) and yet feel adequately humidified. I run it that high by choice because I like the warmth. If you want humidity but not the warmth, run it at 2 or 3.
Good luck--let us know how your treatment is going.
Cindy

The resmed auto can be run as straight CPAP with EPR *or* automode without EPR--just wanted to make sure you know that it can be used as either if it is the S8 vantage model

As Cindy said the humidifier is not attached permanently, however I would get the S8 with the "integrated" (HumidAire 3i) humidifier as opposed to a "stand alone" humidifier. Some functions may not work well (especially with the auto) with a stand alone HH.

I don't understand how or what functions may not work well using a separate humidifier with an S8 machine?

It is not only the S8, Other brands of machines exhibit this also. My S8 Elite CPAP for example will not perform the "auto off" function with my F&P HC150 hooked up. There may well be other features that won't work, but I stoped at the "auto off" as this is important to me.

Many time Autos will not respond to events properly when a stand alone HH is attached. This is a quote from the HC150 manual; "Auto titrating devices may not operate correctly when used with a humidifier. Consult the Auto titrating clinical/operating manuals"

I also seem to recall that RestedGal recently had some problems with a REMstar BiPAP Auto and a stand alone HH.

I am sure a search of autos with stand alone HH will give you additional insight to this.

Get the Auto machine, can be used as regular CPAP if you want. It has more features and nothing less. The Elite is just a CPAP.

Get the humidifier that goes with it -- integrated.

Just curious what you're going to use for a user name when you've been on CPAP for several years.....and have become a seasoned veteran?

Best wishes and welcome to the forum.

Resmed S8 Autoset vs Elite

Post by newcpapuser » Mon Sep 25, 2006 1:02 pm

Also wanted to let you know that there is a cost attached to the two machines - $100 for the Elite and $300 for the Auto (this is over & above my insurance)

Am willing to pay this extra - if it is going to e useful - from most of the emails recd - am leaning towards the Auto - let me know of any problems/issues with it

Thanks

Local DME's gonna stick it to ya, huh?
There should be NO extra charge. They will bill the insurance for the same amount (which will be much more than you can get it for at CPAP.COM) and still make a profit. They're just looking to make MORE profit from your checkbook.
