Ultra Mirage™ Full Face Mask

After 3 nights of using the Ultra Mirage™ Full Face Mask, I feel I can give a fair assessment of my impressions. Seeing that I recently trashed the Hybrid after 3 nights, I feel that to be fair, I would do the same assessment time for the UMFF.

From the very moment I tried on the UMFF in the DME’s office, I knew that there just may be something special about this mask for me.
It was the exact same feeling that I had when I tried on the Mirage Activa™ for the first time.
That wasn’t a total surprise since both masks are made by Resmed, which for the most part, I have come to highly respect for their CPAP masks.

After the Hybrid™failure, I intended on trying the Comfort Full 2™ (Respironics) but upon fitting in the DME office, I was surprised at how bulky the mask seemed, so I passed on it. I also tried the Fisher & Paykel Flexifit 431™, which I took home and tried for one night.
Sadly, the Flexifit just dug into the bridge of my nose, and no matter what I did at home or in the DME office, I could not get comfortable.
I think this is largely due to the fact that there is no adjustment for the bridge of your nose, unlike the UMFF, and the CF2.
That is really a shame, because the Flexifit is VERY lightweight. I don’t think it was as quality constructed as the UMFF, and it’s NOISY as hell, but lightweight!

Getting back to the Ultra Mirage™ Full Face Mask, I am of course TOTALLY pleased with this mask, as it was very comfortable for my side sleeping, and it required very little adjustment (the first night) for me to get a perfect fit.
This mask was originally intended to offer stuffy nose relief (mouth breathe) on nights when I needed it, but I can honestly say that I think it’s a very close second to my Mirage Activa™

The UMFF has been my favorite mask for 19 months now. I switch off once in a while for a nasal interface, but always end up going back to my FF mask after a few nights.

What size UMFF you using?

I got a "Standard" in a trade and it don't work AT ALL. CPAP.com says I need "Medium Shallow". Heh.

Thanks for the thorough review. I am a fan of the Activa myself, and am considering a full face mask for my next "insurance purchased" mask for the cold season. I was starting to look at other masks as options because I had read that the UMFF wasn't that good for side sleeping; thanks for your input specifically on that point. Sounds like it would be worth a try. Ken

Good review. It's been my "one and only" (except I did buy a CF2 for a backup and trial). I'm a side-sleeper and it's worked well for me. As much as I dislike what ResMed may be doing with their Internet pricing scheme, a person needs to get what works best for them.

yep it is a pretty good mask, I'm on my 3rd one coming up on 3 yrs now.

been a lot of gimmic masks I've wasted money on trying to unseat it, but so far none have.

I find it is a comfortable and very quiet mask (compared to all others I've tried).

I'm using the Medium standard, but oddly enough CPAP.com told me also, that I should use the "Medium Shallow".
I asked the gal at the DME if they had a medium shallow, and she said "yes, but those are...um...for people with tiny little noses"! Of course, I did have a very good laugh at that, but the medium standard that I did take, seemed to feel nice. And it is kind of *roomy*, but it worked good lying on my side, so I didn't feel a need to argue with success from that point on.
But OTOH, I was recommended a Medium standard for my Activa, but I found that I liked the roomier feel of a Large, so go figure?

You are absolutely RIGHT about that. It is very quiet compared to EVERYTHING that I've tried.
I would be okay with this being my only mask if it were necessary.

Do you get any facial marks from using the mask.

To be honest, I don't know how the UMFF is for stomach sleeping. I have never slept on my stomach, largely due to some spinal problems. I usually just sleep on my side.
Perhaps one of our other UMFF advocates will chime in on that question if they've had that experience.

In regard to your second question, I have not had any facial marks from the UMFF.
I have heard that some people have used a product called *PadaCheek*, when faced with the occurance of facial marks, although I have never had firsthand experience with that product.

This thread is proof, xPAP treatment is a very personal experience.
I tried 3 different full-face masks, this year (2006). I would have to
rate them quite differently than the previous posters:

1) Hybrids - Simply the best, even better than my CL2 with mouth tape.
Used every night for 13 weeks now.

2) HC431 - Hot and leaky, but better than the UMFF. I was able to tolerate this guy for 2 - 3 hours per night for a week.

3) UMFF - Every time I got the straps tight enough to stop the leaks,
it would start to feel like the mask was going to shove my teeth
down my throat. Also, my lower jaw was very sore the next day.
I was only able to tolerate this beast for 3 trial sessions and part of one
night.

Summary - 'Your mileage may vary'.

I absolutely agree with that concept. It's pretty cut and dry.

the umff mask is the only one i ever used. i made up my mind when i got the machine that i was going to make it work. the first week i had blisters on my face and neck from the mask and straps but they are gone. i did go from a small to a medium which i think is too big and will probably go back to small next time. i can not imagine sleeping without my umff mask. i just wish i could put my glasses on with it so i could see the tv. pat

I have the UMFF as well. (Well.... one of my 7 mask!!!!)

I like it for how quite it is. I think it is the quitest of all of them.

I LOVE my Active!!!

I wish the they would make a full face verison of the Active!!!!! I think that would be an Awesome mask!!!!
