Hybrid Sleep Mask

Post by Ladyhawkke » Wed Sep 20, 2006 1:10 pm

I have been diagnosed with mild to moderate OSA. I went into the sleep clinic last night after unsuccessfully trying the Swift nasal pillows with chin strap but was unable to keep my mouth closed, thereby causing a huge leaking problem. I even taped my mouth shut but the tape came undone. I was fitted with the Hybrid mask and it worked for me. I did experience dry mouth and had red marks on my face upon awakening. Perhaps it was due to using the small mask with the small nasal pillows. Prior to this, through Medicare, an auto cpap was brought to my home to record pressure. However, the pressure was obviously inaccurate as it registered anywhere from 7 to 14 because of mouth leaking since the mask was compensating for the lost air. The Hybrid allows you to either open your mouth or keep it closed. This is great for those who have been taping their mouths shut. My oxygen saturation was between 95-99 throughout the nite and the pressure was never raised higher than 4. The technician told me that he could have raised it but it wasn't necessary and that sometimes raising the pressure can cause apneas. During my 2 prior sleep studies, my oxygen basically stayed around 95 but did drop to 66 and 77, so that was my main concern. I am planning to have my doctor order the Swift 8 Elite cpap w/humidifier along with the hybrid. Hopefully, this will do it as I've been miserable prior to this and was going to give up completely as I refuse to use the full face mask.

Isn't the Hybrid a full face mask?

Well, it is but it isn't. It isn't as "big" as a typically full face mask. It's nice not having something that covers the nose.

No it isn't a full face mask. It covers your mouth and under your chin. It has nasal pillows above the mouth area. The mask comes in small, medium and large so you can get a good fit. Also, your view is not obstructed and you can wear glasses if you wish to use the mask and read in bed. I think it is very small. Someone had written that the straps were a problem to get on and off and I understand that Hybrid is re-doing the straps and they will be available in Oct. But when I get up at night, I just undo the hose. You can go to this link and check it out:

For insurance and sales the hybrid does seem to be considered a Full Face mask. It provides pressure through both the nose and mouth. It is the only mask I've used and I love it.

One dictionary definition of hybrid is "anything derived from heterogeneous sources, or composed of elements of different or incongruous kinds." The Hybrid mask covers the mouth like a full face mask and covers the nose like a nasal pillows mask.

The Hybrid provides therapy like a full face mask but has advantages over a traditional full face mask of greatly reduced claustrophobic feeling, clear field of vision, and no parts touch the nose bridge eliminating irritation of the nose bridge.

According to my DME, for insurance purposes it is considered a full face mask because it provides therapy like a full face mask.

My DME told me that they can code this as a nasal mask or a full face mask. I guess it just depends on the codes used????? (I'm not an expert on dealing with insurance, that's for sure!)

Apria said they consider it a FF mask. My insurance says it is considered a FF mask but because it has pillows will be replaced as a nasal pillow interface would be, every 3 months.

I also use Apria thru my Medicare HMO. I'm interested in your additional comments about the pappillow and PAD-A-CHEEKS. Does Apria carry those?

No. The PAD-A-CHEEKS are from padacheek, a forum member. You can PM her for info or go to the website, padacheek.com. I purchased the cotton covered set because I seem to be allergic to the headgear. They work wonderfully. The Papillow is sold by talkaboutsleep.com, you can also find them on ebay. It is a bit pricey but well worth it (IMHO). If I didn't use cpap I would still love this pillow, it's the most comfortable one I've ever had.

PS. I purchased my first set of PACs and started recommending them to others immediately. SINCE that time I lent padacheek my headgear to use for a model, and when the headgear was returned padacheek enclosed PACs free of charge as a thankyou. If I didn't love them I would not recommend them![/i]

That's true. I'm amazed myself. Apparently during the home study with the auto cpap and using the nasal pillows and chin strap, I had lots of leakage which contributed to the high pressure numbers. In the sleep lab, the tech told me I had no apneas at 4. Truthfully, had my oxygen level not dropped during the first 2 sleep studies I had, I never would have considered being treated. I never had symptoms, never felt tired, never took naps. I'm very active, play tennis 3xwk, constant gardening, etc., am not overweight, and rarely snore. I only went to the clinic because I was only getting 6 hours of sleep and thought I needed more so I was surprised by the diagnosis. LOL. Everyone I know tells me they get way less and the tech who did the study with the Hybrid told me he only got 2 hours of sleep! The second sleep study was a result of my not believing I had OSA. I'm a young 71 and believe this came about because of age and weak muscles in the palate. Anyway, I'm praying that my numbers stay where they are.
