In 1999 I was told I had sleep Apnea.
Along with this problem I constantly have mucus accumulating in my throut
I'm so tired of this,I try to cough it out and I end up with pain in my stomac.
If enyone as any idea to solve this problem I would appriciate it.

Gee I'm sorry. Thats frustrating. I had a similar problem..Find out what you are allergic to. Your house, laundry detergent, pets, polution, FOOD. My case is pets and foods. Corn specifically. Citrus also. Milk . These are in everything so I only eat fresh foods. Nothing from a box. Read the ingredients.
Also give a look at your tonsils (if the're still there). Stuff likes to grow in the perforations, Yuck.

LPR related mucous
Constant mucous in the throat can be a symptom of acid reflux diseas. Specifically look up GERD and LPR, which are linked to apnea. Might be time for an evaluation from an upper GI specialist to look for signs of esophageal damage.
LPR, GERD <=====> Apnea

If I don't use my nasacort AQ when I go to bed, I get the mucous thing in my throat too. I have a bit of acid reflux too, but using the nasal spray sure makes a big difference. It is kind of like post-nasal drip, which is often what causes throat irritation, coughing, and then enlarged tonsils without having tonsilitis. At least this is what my ENT told me
until you can see and allergist and get Flonase
take Echinacea. Any supermarket or drug store has it. One of two should
get rid of it. No guarantees, but heck it is cheap. Otherwise you need
to dinf some Butterbur to take. Might try pseudoephedrine (little red pills) over the counter

Something else you can try is guaifenesin which is the active ingredient in Mucinex. It is an expectorant that thins out mucous and makes it easier to get rid of. You can order generic guaifenesin very cheaply on the Internet without prescription.
It's also used for fibromyalgia. Probably the most comprehensive information about it is at http://www.guaidoc.com, a site about fibromyalgia. There are no known harmful effects and there are people taking thousands of milligrams everyday.

I'm not sure why y'all are complaining. I collect mucous in the back of my throat too. That's just where I keep my collection.
I have my collection of state quarters on my dresser top, my collection of CDs on a rack in the corner, my collection of DVDs scattered around the base of my television stand, and my collection of mucous in the back of my throat.
This is the way things were meant to be.
(Seriously, I feel your pain, I cough almost CONSTANTLY. I know I have some reflux. It's moderate, and doesn't seem to respond particularly well to any of the meds for reflux, but probably not severe enough to require surgery, according to the docs).
Liam, who really, when it comes down to it, just likes gross words like "mucous".

The guanafesin (sp?) is a good idea, so is increasing your fluid intake which will also help thin out the mucous. There is a certain way you can expectorate this mucous, it really has to be shown, can't be explained with words. It is a kind of gagging at the back of the throat after you try to suck out the mucous in the back of your nose to the throat. Remember old men snorting and hacking? It's kind of like that.
For the reflux I take some Gavascon chewable tablets if I have a problem. You can also try taking something like tagamet OTC, about twice recommended dose which is prescription strength twice a day or so to end the reflux and give your esophagus time to heal. Might want to also talk to your doctor about getting on something like Nexium or Aciphex.

Re: mucous in the throat
Guaifenesin, I believe (but I could be off on a vowel or two).Santorini wrote:Guaifenesis, have you taken this?
I was on it for a short time, together with Phenylpropenolamine, which is no longer available.
I recall it worked reasonably well, but I wasn't on it for long, just a short term situation, so I don't have any long-term exposure experience.
Certainly worth a try.
Have you talked to your MD about it? (I have to assume so, with all that you've tried). Maybe it's time to try a different MD, or see if you can see an ear-nose-throat specialist for a consultation?
Liam, who was going to use the technical term for ear-nose-throat, then realized that although he KNOWS it, there's no WAY he could spell it.

Nasacort AQ is a steroid nasal spray, last about 24 hours, the AQ part is Aqueous, which means it won't dry out your nasal membranes. This is one of the first ones I've used that works. And I've used several, including Flonase which did no good whatsoever for me. But my husband swears by it for his allergies. I suffered chronic bronchitis for nearly a year and was on all kind of pills, inhalants, etc. for months. My problem turned out to be allergy induced even though I had no rhinitis associated with it. After 2 years on antigen shots I am pretty much allergy free, but I noticed a big improvement in the number of colds I was getting once I started the antigen shots.
Guanafesin is an expectorant, which means it helps the loosen the mucous in your bronchial tubes so you can "expectorate it". ie. cough it up. It also seems to help reduce coughing during the day.
I've also discovered that mucous in the throat is often a precusor to my getting a cold. So extra vit. C can't hurt.

I had major problems with acid reflux. The medicine that worked best for me was Prilosec. I sometimes take one per day, sometimes two (the prescription dose). One before bed usually works. Two always works for controlling acid. (You may have to be on the dose several days before it completely kicks in.)
This controls the acid, but often doesn't contol the reflux. I would still get it, but it wasn't acidic. Sometimes at night my stomach will feel unsettled. If I go to sleep like this I will have reflux.
I accidentally found that guaifenesin is also good for this. I never actually use it for mucous. I use it to settle my stomach. I take 900 mg. That usually settles my stomach in about 20 minutes. If not, I take another 600 mg and that always works.
I've never seen anyone else say that guaifenesin settles their stomach and prevents reflux, so maybe it's just me.
